Volunteer – Nursing Station

Department: Nursing / Patient Care Services

Location: Muleshoe Area Medical Center 

FLSA Status: Volunteer (Unpaid)

Reports To: CNO/Charge Nurse or Nurse Manager


Position Summary

The Nursing Station Volunteer supports the nursing staff by assisting with non-clinical, clerical, and patient comfort tasks within the nursing station and patient care areas. This role helps enhance patient experience and operational efficiency while allowing nursing staff to focus on direct patient care. Volunteers do not provide medical or clinical services.

Requirements

Key Responsibilities

Greet patients, families, and visitors and provide general, non-medical information.

Assist with answering call lights and promptly notifying nursing staff of patient needs.

Perform clerical and organizational tasks at the nursing station, including filing, assembling forms, and restocking non-medical supplies.

Deliver items such as water, blankets, meals, flowers, or personal belongings as directed by nursing staff.

Escort patients or visitors within the facility when appropriate.

Maintain a clean, organized, and welcoming nursing station environment.

Observe patient needs and communicate concerns to nursing staff in a timely manner.

Follow all hospital policies related to safety, infection control, confidentiality (HIPAA), and volunteer conduct.


Responsibilities Excluded from This Role

Volunteers may not:

Provide clinical care or medical advice.

Perform nursing, diagnostic, or therapeutic procedures.

Handle medications, medical equipment, or patient records beyond assigned clerical tasks.

Assist with patient transfers or mobility unless specifically trained and authorized.


Requirements & Qualifications

Minimum age: 16 years 

High school diploma or equivalent preferred.

Strong communication and interpersonal skills.

Compassionate, professional demeanor with patients and families.

Ability to maintain confidentiality and comply with HIPAA regulations.

Reliable, punctual, and able to follow instructions.

Completion of hospital volunteer orientation and required screenings (background check, immunizations, TB test, etc.).

Physical & Mental Requirements

Ability to stand, walk, and sit for extended periods.

Ability to lift up to 15 pounds (non-patient items only).

Ability to interact calmly and professionally in a healthcare environment.
