We’re seeking a consultant with extensive (10+ years) climate adaptation experience to develop practical, high-impact guidance and toolkits that help health systems worldwide adapt to climate challenges. This short-term role will work closely with HCWH’s Global Climate and Global Green and Healthy Hospitals (GGHH) Team and is an opportunity to create widely used resources for a global network of healthcare leaders.

ORGANIZATIONAL OVERVIEW:

Health Care Without Harm (HCWH) is an international nongovernmental organization (NGO) that works to transform healthcare worldwide so that it reduces its environmental footprint, becomes a community anchor for sustainability and a leader in the global movement for environmental health and justice. With regional offices in the United States, Europe, and Southeast Asia, a regional team in Latin America, a Global secretariat, and a network of strategic partners across continents, HCWH fosters global and regional collaborations to address climate and health issues.

Health Care Without Harm’s International Climate Program developed a 2024-2028 strategy as part of a larger International Network Strategy that encompassed all programs and main vehicles (Climate, Plastics, Supply Chains, Global Green and Healthy Hospitals, and Health Professionals Networks). The “Climate Resilience” component of the HCWH International network strategy 2024-2028 aims to connect mitigation and adaptation actions towards resilience building. This is a new approach for HCWH, since the organization’s global focus has been mitigation and the carbon footprint of the health care sector. By 2028, our goal is to accelerate the path towards decarbonization of the health sector worldwide and position it as a leader in the societal transition away from fossil fuels, while also accelerating its adaptation actions–particularly those that synergize with mitigation measures to build resilience.

A key vehicle for the Climate Resilience strategy is HCWH’s Global Green and Healthy Hospitals (GGHH). In 2026, there is a great opportunity to advance our adaptation work through strategic partners, as we prepare to launch a new GGHH framework (“GGHH 2.0”). The new framework will include an adaptation pillar that will be more prominent than in our current version and provide us with the space to develop guidance on adaptation to the 70,000+ health facilities who are members of GGHH in over 80 countries.

SCOPE OF WORK:

The purpose of this consultancy is to design and develop three resources that can be easily updated (online) to be disseminated and applied with GGHH members. We anticipate the topics will cover:

  1. Vulnerability and Adaptation toolkit options for health facilities
  2. Adaptation Planning Guidance
  3. Integrating Adaptation and Mitigation Action: case studies

The documents should be written in English and should be informational, referenced, and concise, with clear recommendations for different contexts, to be determined with the International Climate and GGHH teams.

DELIVERABLES & TIMELINE:

We expect the consultant to start in mid-May 2026 with a review of documents, and to attend our GGHH and Climate convening at the end of May 2026 in Bangkok, Thailand to understand the GGHH 2.0 framework and participate in a health facility vulnerability and adaptation assessment tool training.

By mid-June 2026, the first draft of the three guidance documents should be submitted for review by the adaptation working group and HCWH global team staff (International Climate and GGHH). Feedback will be returned to the consultant within two weeks.

By mid-July, the final version of the three guidance documents should be submitted to the communications team to have a final review of content, format and design in accordance with organizational requirements.

The consultant will work closely with the communications team to finalize the guidance in English by mid-August 2026.

All costs of travel to Bangkok, Thailand will be covered by HCWH, in accordance with organizational policies, which will be shared with the consultant.

MANAGEMENT & LOGISTICS:

  • The consultant will work under the supervision of the International Climate Senior Director.
  • The consultant will work closely with 3-4 HCWH and strategic partner staff (adaptation working group) to ensure the content of the guidance speaks to a large base of the GGHH network.
  • The consultant will work closely with the International Climate and Sustainability Data Scientist, as well as with the GGHH Climate Initiatives Specialist.
  • The consultant will also work closely with the HCWH global communications team to ensure the design, format and content follows organizational guidelines.
