BASIC POSITION FUNCTION: The Village of Alsip Water Department is seeking a motivated and reliable individual for the position of Class II Water Department Operator / Laborer. This position plays a vital role in ensuring the safe and efficient operation of our water distribution and treatment systems. The successful candidate will work under the direction of the Water Foreman, assisting with daily maintenance, repairs, water quality monitoring, and other essential tasks that support the community’s water infrastructure.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
· Assist in the operation, maintenance, and repair of water distribution and treatment systems.
· Perform routine inspections of water pipelines, pumps, and other infrastructure.
· Collect water samples and assist with water quality testing to ensure regulatory compliance.
· Respond to water main breaks, leaks, and other emergencies, assisting with repairs and restoration of service.
· Install and maintain water meters, hydrants, and service lines.
· Operate and maintain various tools and equipment related to water system operations.
· Provide excellent customer service by responding to customer inquiries and concerns.
· Follow all safety protocols and ensure compliance with state and federal water regulations.
TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED:
· Hand and Power Tools: Wrenches, pipe cutters, drills, grinders, and hydraulic tools for water system maintenance and repairs.
· Heavy Equipment: Backhoes, excavators, trenchers, and loaders for digging and installing or repairing water lines.
· Water Testing Equipment: Sampling kits, pressure gauges, flow meters, and water quality testers for monitoring water standards.
· Vehicles: Department trucks and trailers for transporting tools, equipment, and materials to work sites.
· Safety Gear: Personal protective equipment (PPE) such as gloves, helmets, steel-toed boots, and confined space entry gear.
· Miscellaneous Tools: Measuring devices, welding equipment, and manual tools for digging, repairs, and installations.
POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
· Requires the ability to operate, maneuver and/or provide simple but continuous adjustment on equipment, machinery and tools and/or materials used.
· Ability to interpret instructions furnished in written, oral, diagrammatic or schedule form.
· Ability to exercise independent judgment to adopt or modify methods and standards to meet variations in assigned objective.
· Minimum education of a GED or HS diploma.
· Ability to read, write, understand and communicate in English.
· Class A or B CDL license desired, or ability to obtain one within 6 months of starting employment.
· Must pass IDOT physical and drug screen
· Must complete a background investigation
· Must meet a 25-mile residency requirement
· Capable of working on-call, nights, weekends, and during emergency situations.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILL & ABILITY:
Knowledge:
· Basic knowledge of water distribution systems, including pipes, valves, pumps, and meters.
· Understanding of water quality standards, regulatory requirements, and testing procedures.
· Knowledge of safety practices and regulations related to water utility operations.
· Familiarity with tools, equipment, and machinery used in the operation and maintenance of water systems.

· Technical Skills: Ability to operate and maintain hand tools, power tools, and heavy equipment (e.g., backhoes, trenchers) used in water system repairs and installations.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
· Ability to perform physical labor, including lifting, carrying, and digging, with the ability to lift and move objects up to 80 pounds.
· Ability to work in a variety of environments, including confined spaces, at heights, and in all weather conditions.
· Ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel, and squat for extended periods.
· Walks, sits, stands, bends, lifts, climbs ladders and/or stairs. Moves continually during working hours. Use hands/fingers to grasp, handle or feel objects, tools, or controls, and reach with hands and arms. Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Hepatitis vaccine is required.
