Position: Career Advisor – Behavioral & Allied Health

Classification: Full-Time, Non-Exempt, Grant-Funded (Term-Limited)

Grant Status: This is a grant-funded, term-limited position supported by the Eli and Edythe Broad Foundation through September, 2027, contingent upon continued grant funding.

Reports to: Sr. Manager, Career and Enrollment Advising

MISSION: Futuro Health launched in 2020 to address the critical shortage of workers in the healthcare sector. Position Summary: The Career Advisor – Behavioral & Allied Health supports individuals pursuing entry-level careers in behavioral and allied health by providing high-quality career preparation, pathway education, and community-facing engagement. This is a grant-funded, term-limited role in partnership with the Eli and Edythe Broad Foundation, supporting workforce development initiatives in Los Angeles County through the end of 2027. The position is designed to advance grant-defined outcomes related to career readiness, credential attainment, and employment placement in behavioral and allied health roles.

This role serves as a subject-matter-informed advisor for programs including Peer Support Specialist, EMT, and Community Health Worker, ensuring scholars are well-prepared, informed, and positioned for successful employment. The advisor manages an active caseload, builds supportive relationships, addresses barriers to career preparation, and maintains accurate records. This position balances career advising and facilitation with select outreach activities, particularly through informational webinars and cultivation of trusted community partnerships.


Essential Job Functions:


Career Advising & Job Readiness (Primary Focus)

  • Provide individualized and group-based career advising for scholars pursuing behavioral and allied health pathways.
  • Deliver resume support and interview preparation, with a focus on healthcare, community-based, and entry-level employer expectations.
  • Support scholars in translating lived experience, volunteer work, and informal caregiving into employable skills.
  • Prepare scholars for the realities of behavioral and allied health roles, including:
  • Work environments and schedules
  • Emotional labor and boundaries
  • Certification and onboarding expectations
  • Identify readiness gaps and recommend next steps or alternative pathways prior to beginning their program when appropriate.
  • Continuously research and maintain up-to-date knowledge of healthcare workforce trends, credentialing requirements, clinical placement standards, and employer expectations. Apply this knowledge to provide accurate guidance to scholars and ensure alignment with evolving industry standards.
  • Partner with employers to ensure students are aligned to open positions and meet application criteria.

Program Education & Facilitation

  • Lead detailed webinars, virtual orientations, and online info sessions for behavioral and allied health programs.
  • Serve as a knowledgeable presenter on:
  • Peer Support Specialist roles and certification pathways
  • Community Health Worker career options
  • EMT training and entry into emergency medical services
  • Ensure program messaging is accurate, realistic, and aligned with employer, grant, and regulatory expectations.

Community Outreach & Recruitment Support

  • Participate in targeted outreach efforts to support scholar recruitment, including:
  • Virtual info sessions hosted with community-based organizations
  • Connecting with foster youth and social service partners 
  • Engagement with Los Angeles employers to advance grant initiatives and ensure students are aligned to job requirement.
  • Serve as a trusted program representative when engaging with community partners.
  • Collaborate with the engagement team and advising staff to ensure a strong handoff from interest to enrollment.
  • Support relationship-building with select community organizations as assigned.
  • Assist prospective scholars in career exploration effectively by navigating admissions and enrollment processes to ensure they meet deadlines and apply for the program that best fits their interests.

Collaboration & Continuous Improvement

  • Partner with internal teams to align advising practices with program goals and workforce outcomes.
  • Maintain accurate documentation of advising interactions and outcomes in internal systems.

Required Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated experience in behavioral health, community health, allied health, or workforce development.
  • Strong understanding of at least one of the following roles: Peer Support Specialist, Community Health Worker, EMT.
  • Experience supporting individuals from under-resourced or non-traditional backgrounds.
  • Ability to facilitate group presentations and conduct 1:1 advising.
  • Knowledge of job readiness best practices, including resume development and interview preparation.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Lived or proximate experience in behavioral or community health roles.
  • Prior experience working with:
  • Foster youth
  • Justice-impacted individuals
  • First-generation or adult learners
  • Familiarity with LA County’s community and workforce ecosystem.
  • Existing relationships with LA County community-based organizations.
  • Experience working in nonprofit, public health, or workforce training environments.
  • Trauma-informed and culturally responsive approach.
  • Strong communication and facilitation skills.
  • Ability to balance encouragement with realism.
  • Relationship-driven, not transactional.
  • High integrity and accountability in advising.

Education: Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in a Service role, or Academic setting. 


Supervisory Responsibility: This role does not have supervisory responsibility over other staff. 


Work Environment/Travel: This is a remote role. Travel will be required to attend meetings and conferences. This position requires mandatory travel twice per year to attend Futuro Health’s Spring and Fall In-Person All-Hands events. Participation in these events is an essential function of the role, as these gatherings support strategic alignment, cross-department collaboration, and organizational effectiveness, which cannot be fully achieved in a virtual format. As a condition of employment, employees must be able to fulfill this twice-yearly travel requirement. Reasonable accommodations will be provided as required by applicable law.


Physical Demands: Able to sit, stand, and type for long periods of time. Ability to work irregular hours including after hours and weekends although this will be infrequent. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.  

 

Position Type: This position is full-time, non-exempt. The hours may include weekends, nights and holidays.
