Position Scope:
The Welder is responsible for operating robotic and manual MIG weld machines to fabricate and assemble Caterpillar components. This role includes performing quality checks, repairing defective welds, and following documented procedures to ensure safe, defect-free operations. Welders use lifting devices to handle heavy components and adhere to Caterpillar safety and contamination control standards.
Knowledge and Skill Requirements:
- Ability to operate MIG welding equipment and robotic welding systems.
- Knowledge of welding procedures, safety standards, and quality inspection tools.
- Ability to read and follow documented work instructions and routings.
- Basic math and measurement skills for quality checks.
- Physical ability to lift up to 25 lbs and perform repetitive operations.
Preferred Qualification(s):
- MIG welding experience in a manufacturing environment.
- Welding trade certificate or diploma.
Education Requirements:
- High school diploma or GED required.
- Welding certification or equivalent training preferred.
Essential Job Functions:
- Operate robotic and manual MIG weld machines.
- Perform quality checks using weld gauges and measuring tools.
- Repair defective welds using grinders.
- Follow standard work procedures to ensure safe and defect-free operations.
- Use lifting devices to move heavy components.
- Complete Caterpillar-provided training and AWS D1.1 welder qualification tests.
- Work overtime as needed to support business needs.
Leadership Responsibilities:
This position does not include supervisory responsibilities but requires adherence to Caterpillar safety and quality standards.
Preferred Experience and Skills:
- Two or more years of continuous welding or manufacturing experience.
- MIG welding certification and experience with robotic welding systems.
- Caterpillar product knowledge.
Physical and Mental Requirements:
- Ability to sit or stand for prolonged periods.
- Ability to perform repetitive operations.
- Ability to lift up to 25 lbs.
- Must pass Caterpillar-provided AWS D1.1 welder qualification tests.
Work Environment:
- Manufacturing environment with exposure to welding fumes, heat, and noise.
- Requires use of PPE and adherence to safety protocols.
- Standard work schedule with overtime as needed.
Most work is conducted in a comfortable office environment but exposure to site conditions may also occur. Personal protective equipment must be worn in areas as required. Although the work usually is not considered inherently dangerous, employees must be careful while performing onsite services.
