Certified Sterile Processing & Surgical Technologist (Scrub Tech)

Position Summary 

This dual-role position integrates sterile processing and intraoperative scrub responsibilities to support efficient, high-quality gynecologic surgical care in a single operating room ambulatory setting. The role is responsible for both instrument reprocessing and sterilization as well as direct surgical assistance in the operating room, ensuring seamless case flow, rapid turnover, and strict adherence to sterile technique and infection prevention standards.


Key Responsibilities 


Sterile Processing Duties 

  • Perform decontamination, cleaning, inspection, assembly, and sterilization of surgical instruments and equipment  
  • Prepare and organize procedure-specific instrument trays for gynecologic cases (e.g., hysteroscopy, D&C, laparoscopy, LEEP)  
  • Operate and monitor sterilization systems (steam autoclaves, low-temperature sterilizers)  
  • Maintain accurate sterilization logs, biological indicators, and quality assurance documentation  
  • Ensure proper instrument tracking, storage, and inventory control  
  • Identify damaged instruments and coordinate repair or replacement  
  • Prepare cases based on daily surgical schedule  
  • Support rapid instrument turnaround between cases  

Surgical Technologist (Scrub) Duties 

  • Set up and maintain the sterile field for gynecologic procedures  
  • Perform surgical scrub, gowning, and gloving using aseptic technique  
  • Anticipate surgeon needs and efficiently pass instruments, sutures, and supplies  
  • Assist with patient positioning, prepping, and draping  
  • Conduct and document instrument, sponge, and sharps counts  
  • Handle and label surgical specimens per protocol  
  • Ensure all equipment and instruments are available and functioning prior to procedures  
  • Assist with room turnover and preparation for subsequent cases  

Workflow & Operational Responsibilities 

  • Coordinate closely with surgeons, nurses, and anesthesia to ensure on-time case starts and efficient turnover  
  • Prioritize instrument processing based on case urgency and schedule changes  
  • Maintain strict compliance with AAMI, AORN, CDC, OSHA, and accreditation standards  
  • Act as a key contributor to infection prevention and patient safety initiatives  
  • Support a high-volume, fast-paced outpatient surgical environment  
Requirements

 

Qualifications 

  • Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) required  
  • Certified Registered Central Service Technician (CRCST) or equivalent strongly preferred (or willingness to obtain within defined timeframe)  
  • Current BLS certification  
  • 2+ years of experience in surgical and/or sterile processing roles, preferably in OB/GYN or ambulatory surgery  
  • Strong knowledge of gynecologic instrumentation and minimally invasive procedures  
  • Solid understanding of sterilization standards and infection control practices  
  • Ability to multitask and transition between SPD and OR responsibilities efficiently

Work Environment 

  • Ambulatory Surgery Center (ASC)  
  • Monday through Friday, daytime surgery schedule  
  • High-efficiency workflow with emphasis on speed, accuracy, and coordination  
  • Oversee sterilization processes supporting both the ASC and clinic operations, where applicable 
  • Small, collaborative team environment with strong provider interaction 
Salary Description
$28-$38/hour
