The Penobscot Bay YMCA is expanding its childcare programming through an exciting new partnership with RSU 13 at South School in Rockland. This new location features larger classrooms, a spacious playground, and access to nature trails—creating an incredible environment for children, families, and staff.

This position is employed by the Penobscot Bay YMCA and operates in partnership with RSU 13 at the South School location.

We are seeking a Childcare Director to lead this program and help shape its future. This role oversees multiple classrooms, including our public Pre-K partnership, and offers a unique opportunity to build and grow a high-quality early learning program from the ground up.

What You’ll Do

• Lead daily operations of the childcare program, ensuring a high-quality experience for children and families
• Supervise, coach, and develop childcare staff through ongoing support and professional development
• Provide classroom support and coverage as needed
• Guide implementation of age-appropriate curriculum that supports children’s development
• Maintain a safe, clean, and nurturing environment
• Oversee scheduling, enrollment, and day-to-day program operations
• Build strong, responsive relationships with families
• Maintain accurate records, including attendance, incidents, and licensing documentation
• Lead staff meetings, trainings, and team development initiatives
• Support community engagement and connect families with YMCA programs and resources 


 

Essential Functions

• Ensure compliance with state licensing regulations, NAEYC standards, and YMCA policies
• Monitor program quality and participation, making adjustments as needed
• Respond appropriately to medical situations, behavioral concerns, and emergencies
• Foster an inclusive, welcoming environment for children, families, and staff
• Support outreach efforts and program growth
• Perform additional duties as needed to support overall program success


 

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s or Associate’s degree in Early Childhood Education, Child Development, or related field, or equivalent experience
• 1–2+ years of experience in childcare, education, or a related setting
• Leadership experience or demonstrated interest in team development preferred
• Strong understanding of early childhood development and classroom practices
• Excellent communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills
• Ability to manage multiple priorities in a dynamic environment
• Commitment to creating an inclusive and supportive environment
• Comfortable using basic computer systems or willingness to learn

Required trainings include Mandated Reporter and YMCA Child Abuse Prevention (completed during onboarding), with CPR, First Aid, and AED certification required within 30 days of hire.


 

Schedule & Additional Benefits

• Monday–Friday daytime schedule (between 7:00 AM – 5:30 PM) — no nights or weekends
• Monthly State of Maine stipend (currently $240+) in addition to base pay
• Opportunity to work across classrooms serving toddlers through Pre-K

Work Environment & Physical Demands

This is an active, hands-on leadership role. The Director should be able to:

• Lift up to 40 pounds as needed
• Bend, kneel, twist, and move throughout the day
• Actively supervise children in indoor and outdoor settings
• Respond quickly and appropriately to safety needs
• Work outdoors in all seasons

Salary Description
$57,000 - $62,000, depending on experience
