General Statement of Duties
Performs routine unskilled and some semi-skilled manual work in buildings and grounds maintenance.
Distinguishing Features of the Class
Employees in this class perform general cleaning and some manual labor involving a variety of buildings and grounds tasks. Work involves the use of various cleaning products, tools, and light equipment.
Typical duties include dusting offices, cleaning floors, windows, and bathrooms; replacing paper supplies; emptying trash; delivering packages; and occasionally performing routine grounds maintenance.
Work is performed in both indoor and outdoor environments and may involve exposure to hazards such as loud noises, vibration, moving mechanical parts, electrical current, chemicals, and human body fluids. Employees are subject to OSHA requirements regarding bloodborne pathogens.
Work is performed under the supervision of the Buildings Maintenance Supervisor and is evaluated through observation and inspection for thoroughness and effectiveness.
Duties and Responsibilities
Essential Duties and Tasks
- Cleans buildings by vacuuming, mopping, sweeping, dusting, and maintaining restrooms and fixtures
- Cleans windows; shampoos carpets; buffs and waxes floors
- Stocks restrooms with paper products and soap
- Replaces and restocks supplies
- Performs grounds maintenance, including:
- Removing leaves and debris
- Cleaning sidewalks, parking lots, and porches
- Locks and unlocks buildings
- Sets up rooms for meetings and moves furniture
- Removes trash and debris
- Monitors heating and air systems for proper operation
- Performs minor repairs (e.g., tightening screws, oiling parts)
- Operates power equipment such as vacuums, steam cleaners, and buffers
- Maintains inventory of cleaning supplies
Additional Job Duties
- Waters plants and maintains exterior appearance
- Raises and lowers flags
- Removes snow and ice from sidewalks
- Unloads supply deliveries and maintains stock areas
- Picks up and delivers mail
- Performs other related duties as assigned
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Working knowledge of custodial methods and unskilled manual labor techniques
- Knowledge of cleaning materials, tools, and equipment used in building and grounds maintenance
- Knowledge of standard hand tools and light equipment operation
- Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions
- Basic understanding of custodial and cleaning practices
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
- Ability to interact courteously with employees and the public
- Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions
Physical Requirements
- Ability to perform physically demanding tasks including climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, and lifting
- Ability to exert:
- Up to 50 pounds occasionally
- Up to 20 pounds frequently
- Up to 10 pounds constantly
- Visual ability to safely operate equipment such as mowers, vacuum cleaners, and small vehicles
Desirable Education and Experience
- Ability to read and write
- Any combination of education and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities
Special Requirements
- May require possession of a valid North Carolina driver’s license
