This is your opportunity to practice at the top of your license while delivering critical care in a fast-paced environment that serves a vital and underserved community.  Eastern Shawnee Staffing Services, in partnership with Indian Health Services (IHS), is seeking a dedicated ER Nurse Practitioner (NP) or Physician Assistant (PA) for a long-term contract assignment at Northern Navajo Medical Center (NNMC) in Shiprock, New Mexico. This position offers the chance to combine professional growth, meaningful patient impact, and a dynamic emergency care setting.


Start Date: June/July
Location: Northern Navajo Medical Center (NNMC), Shiprock, NM
Setting: Emergency Department
Schedule: Part-time, with the ability to increase up to full-time hours based on department needs and availability | Rotating shifts (days, nights, weekends, holidays)
Contract Type: 1099 Government Contractor (Locum)
Duration: Up to 1 year with extension options

Position Overview

The ER Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant will provide emergency medical care to patients of all ages, managing acute and urgent conditions in a high-volume emergency department serving the Navajo Nation.


Key Responsibilities

  • Perform rapid assessments, triage, and medical screening exams 
  • Diagnose and treat acute illnesses and injuries in an emergency setting 
  • Order and interpret diagnostic tests including labs and imaging 
  • Perform emergency procedures within scope (suturing, splinting, wound care, etc.) 
  • Stabilize and manage critically ill patients 
  • Prescribe medications in accordance with IHS formulary guidelines 
  • Collaborate with physicians, nursing staff, and multidisciplinary teams 
  • Coordinate patient transfers when higher levels of care are required 
  • Maintain accurate and timely documentation in the EHR system 
  • Follow all IHS protocols, including infection control and patient safety standards 
  • Provide culturally competent care to diverse patient populations

Requirements

 

Qualifications

  • Graduate of an accredited Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant program 
  • Board Certified NP (FNP or ENP preferred) or PA-C 
  • Minimum of 2–3 years of Emergency Medicine or Urgent Care experience required 
  • Active, unrestricted license in any U.S. state or territory 
  • Active DEA registration 
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification 
  • Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) required 
  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) required 
  • Experience with Indian Health Services (IHS) or tribal healthcare systems preferred 
  • Experience working in rural or underserved settings preferred 
  • Must be a U.S. citizen residing primarily in the United States 
  • Must be able to pass a federal background/security clearance 
  • Proof of education (diploma or transcripts required)
