New Canaan Country School is a co-ed, independent day school for students in Pre-K (ages 3 & 4) through Grade 9 living in Fairfield and Westchester Counties. About the Beginners 4/5 Assistant Teacher Position


The Beginners 4/5 Assistant Teacher serves as a member of our Early Childhood School faculty. Our Early Childhood teachers are experienced, dynamic and possess a strong sense of pedagogy. They demonstrate a commitment to bringing out the best in each student and ensure that each child is known, seen, loved and valued. Each Beginners Assistant teacher works closely with not only the Lead Teacher but also the grade-level colleagues to collaborate on new and existing curricular initiatives in support of student learning and development. The school is seeking an energetic and experienced assistant teacher for a Beginners 4/5 grade level leave replacement position for the year 2026-27. This is a one-year position. 


Responsibilities

  • Lead multi-sensory lessons in the primary curricular areas 
  • Attend, participate and contribute at weekly grade-level team meetings, Divisional Meetings and Wednesday Professional Development Sessions
  • Support the lead teacher in maintaining a clean and inviting classroom to serve as the child’s third teacher
  • Manage the classroom and teach across subjects in the Lead Teacher’s absence
  • Serve on Admission observation teams and participate in admission-related outreach events 
  • Continue to grow professionally by attending workshops, conferences, in-service training, and staying up to date on current literature and best practices
  • Collaborates with colleagues to construct curriculum, share teaching methods, materials and review assessment data in the service of the children
Requirements
  • Understanding of the social, emotional and academic needs of students and the ability to connect with students at this age level
  • A solid understanding of pedagogy and classroom management skills
  • Ability to communicate and collaborate with colleagues to support student growth
  • Relevant experience teaching the age group
  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university
