The Production Pharmacy Technician is responsible for the accurate preparation, packaging, labeling, and quality control of medications in a high-volume long-term care or closed-door pharmacy environment. This role utilizes automated adherence packaging systems, including Pillvac, MTS-350, and Omnicell E3 equipment, to produce blister-packed medications while maintaining compliance with state and federal pharmacy regulations, company policies, and quality assurance standards. The technician works under the supervision of a licensed pharmacist to ensure timely and accurate medication fulfillment for patients and healthcare facilities.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Operate and maintain Pillvac, MTS-350, and Omnicell E3 automated packaging equipment to produce blister-packed medications.
  • Prepare, load, and replenish medications, blister cards, labels, and packaging materials for automated production runs.
  • Verify medication identity, strength, lot numbers, expiration dates, and packaging specifications prior to production.
  • Monitor machine performance and troubleshoot routine operational issues to minimize downtime.
  • Perform pre-packaging and cycle-fill activities in accordance with pharmacy workflow schedules.
  • Inspect completed blister packs for accuracy, seal integrity, print quality, proper medication placement, and compliance with packaging standards.
  • Stage completed orders for pharmacist verification and final approval.
  • Maintain production records, batch logs, machine documentation, and inventory tracking records.
  • Rotate stock and remove expired or recalled medications in accordance with pharmacy procedures.
  • Assist with inventory management, including stocking, counting, and replenishing medications and supplies.
  • Perform routine cleaning, calibration checks, and preventive maintenance activities on packaging equipment.
  • Adhere to all HIPAA requirements, pharmacy regulations, SOPs, quality assurance programs, and medication safety standards.
  • Meet established productivity, accuracy, and turnaround-time goals while maintaining a high level of quality.
Requirements

Required Skills & Abilities

  • Active TX Pharmacy Technician registration/license as required by state law.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to medication accuracy.
  • Ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced production environment.
  • Basic computer and pharmacy software proficiency.
  • Knowledge of pharmacy terminology, medication packaging standards, and pharmacy regulations.
  • Understanding of blister packaging, cycle-fill processing, and adherence packaging workflows.
  • Ability to identify packaging defects, medication discrepancies, and machine malfunctions.
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills.
  • Effective communication and teamwork abilities.
  • Commitment to patient safety, quality assurance, and continuous improvement.

 

Preferred Experience

  • Experience in long-term care, closed-door, mail-order, or high-volume production pharmacy environments.
  • Automated adherence packaging and blister card production experience.
  • Familiarity with Pillvac automation systems.
  • Experience with MTS-350 pre-packaging operations.
  • Experience with Omnicell E3 or other automated medication dispensing and packaging systems.


Physical Requirements

  • Must be able to lift up to 40 pounds at times and traverse close quarters quickly.
  • Must be able to stand/be on feet for the duration of an eight (8) hour shift.
