SUMMARY: TAS' welder's job is to join metal parts together or repair metal structures using heat, pressure, or both. Welders also maintain welding equipment and monitor the welding process. 


Responsibilities

Read blueprints: Interpret blueprints, sketches, and specifications 

Measure parts: Calculate the dimensions of parts to be welded 

Inspect materials: Examine materials or structures to be welded 

Weld parts: Join metal parts together in flat, vertical, or overhead positions 

Monitor process: Adjust heat as needed to avoid overheating 

Maintain equipment: Keep welding equipment and machinery in good working order 

Detect issues: Identify faulty equipment or defective material and report to a supervisor

Welder competency is a welder's level of knowledge and skill, as well as their ability to follow safety guidelines. Welders who are competent are able to perform their work safely and to the required specifications. 

Additional tasks may be required.


Competency levels

Level 1: Aware of unsafe conditions and how to avoid injury

Level 2: Follows safety rules and procedures, and avoids known hazards

Level 3: Follows safety rules and procedures consistently, and uses all necessary safety equipment



Requirements

Precision: Welders need to be precise and pay close attention to detail 

Mathematical skills: Welders need to be able to read blueprints, understand spatial reasoning, and interpret 2D and 3D models 

Safety certifications: Welders often need certifications in welding techniques and safety standards 

Experience: Welders should have experience with specific welding methods and relevant projects 

Education: Welders typically need a high school diploma or equivalent
