New Canaan Country School is a co-ed, independent day school for students in Pre-K (ages 3 & 4) through Grade 9 living in Fairfield and Westchester Counties. About the Structured Literacy Teacher Position


The part-time K-5 Structured Literacy Teacher is a dedicated, compassionate, energetic professional who delivers a comprehensive, structured literacy program to students with identified learning difficulties. This part-time position will be 14 hours per week teaching small groups of students in Kindergarten through 5th grade. NCCS is seeking an independent contractor who can fulfill this role on a consulting basis with the school (non-staff position). 

  • K-5 Structured Literacy Teacher delivers explicit, multisensory, systematic, cumulative, prescriptive, and diagnostic instruction utilizing the Orton-Gillingham approach 
  • Maintain a high level of reading instruction that includes lesson planning, program implementation, progress monitoring, and assessment 
  • Maintain student growth and performance records by collecting and analyzing student data
  • Utilize formative and summative data to plan and adjust instruction 
  • Routinely communicate progress to the student's team, including classroom teachers, specialist teachers, speech & language pathologists, occupational therapists, and parents/guardians

  • Create a positive, emotionally responsive, developmentally appropriate, inclusive classroom culture 
  • Develop highly engaging, motivating, well-paced, multisensory lessons 
  • Utilize positive, effective, student-centered classroom management strategies 
  • Provide individualized differentiation, accommodations, and modifications
  • Deliver all components of explicit instruction strategies
  • Collaborate with team members to develop well-designed instruction and assignments
  • Monitor and evaluate student growth and performance 
  • Write student progress reports 
  • Participate in team meetings and parent/guardian conferences, as needed
Requirements
  • Teaching Credential (Education Specialist, Special Education, Reading Instruction or related certification)
  • Training/Certification in multisensory literacy intervention (Orton-Gillingham Associate Level, Wilson Reading System, IMSE) 
  • Minimum of 3 years teaching structured literacy preferred
  • Master’s degree in special education, teaching, or literacy
