Primary Function

The Director of Music and Liturgy provides leadership in the planning, execution, and celebration of all parish liturgies, with the assistance of the sacristan coordinator, liturgy assistant, liturgical ministers, and volunteers. He/she also provides leadership for the cantors, choirs, ensembles, and accompanists in fostering participation in music by the assembly.

Requirements

  

Responsibilities

General

· Develop formal and informal communication procedures that adequately inform staff and volunteers of special liturgies

· Coordinate with the ministry volunteer for scheduling of liturgical ministers

· Participate in decision-making regarding liturgically specific parish direction and activities.

· Submit musician payroll every four weeks

· Manage the music/liturgy portion of the annual parish budget.

· Ensure proper musical licenses are paid and perform required reporting (CCLI, OneLicense)

Music

· Schedule musicians for all weekend liturgies, special Masses (Confirmation, St. Joseph, etc.) and funerals

· Develop Mass plans for all weekend liturgies, special Masses (Confirmation, St. Joseph, etc.) 

· Work with the wedding coordinator to plan music with the engaged couples

· Assure that the parish’s music conforms to church and diocesan directives

· Direct and rehearse choir(s) as needed

· Ensure that the organ, pianos, and all musical instruments are maintained, repaired, and tuned as needed

· Ensure the AV system in the church is functioning

· Maintain the parish music library

Worship

· Work with presiders and liturgical ministers to discern parish worship and prayer needs and to assure quality liturgical celebrations and sacramental services.

· Hire and train sacristans, along with the sacristan coordinator.

· Recruit, train, direct, and supervise all ministry volunteers – Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion, Lectors, Ushers, and Altar Servers.

· Work with the sacristan coordinator to make sure there is an adequate supply of wine, hosts, altar candles, devotional candles, candle oil, liturgical linens, charcoal, incense, baptism bibs, baptism candles, holy water bottles, hand sanitizer, water, Kleenex, etc.

· Coordinate cleaning of altar linens with the assistance of the linen coordinator

· Plan the sanctuary environment for the different liturgical seasons and Holy Days.

· Prepare worship aids when needed

· Supervise the changing of missalettes at the beginning of each new liturgical year

· Review and confirm the parish’s annual order of missalettes and other musical subscriptions

Catholic Church and Diocese

· Expand working knowledge and appreciation of Catholic liturgical and musical traditions

· Maintain awareness of current trends in liturgy and music by reading church documents and professional journals

Professional Development

· Keep current with official statements and documents on music and liturgy

· Study various musical and liturgical publications

· Membership in professional organizations and attendance at local, regional, and national conferences and workshops

  

Hours

The Director of Music and Liturgy will work the appropriate number of hours to make sure that all of the above responsibilities and duties are accomplished. The Director of Music and Liturgy is not expected to be present for all parish liturgies; however, he/she is expected to be at key Masses, such as Christmas, Triduum, Easter, Confirmation, etc. 

Salary Description
$25-$27 per hour
