The Sterling Deanery of the Rockford Diocese serves grades PK-12 with schools in Rock Falls, Dixon, and Sterling.  The schools are seeking qualified and faith-filled Substitute Teachers to support student learning during teacher absences.  This position is available across the deanery. The ideal candidate will uphold the mission and values of Catholic education, foster a nurturing classroom environment, and deliver instruction aligned with the school's academic and spiritual goals.


KEY Responsibilities:

  • Provide instruction based on lesson plans prepared by the regular teacher. 
  • Maintain classroom order and promote a positive, respectful, and faith-centered environment. 
  • Incorporate Catholic values into interactions and classroom management. 
  • Ensure the safety and well-being of students at all times. 
  • Supervise students in various settings, including the classroom, lunchroom, and outdoor recess areas. 
  • Communicate effectively with school staff and leave a summary of the day for the returning teacher.

Qualifications:

  • A bachelor’s degree is required. 
  • A Valid teaching credential or substitute permit is preferred. 
  • Prior teaching or classroom experience preferred. 
  • Practicing Catholic or committed to supporting the mission of Catholic education. 
  • Ability to follow lesson plans, manage a classroom, and adapt to a range of grade levels (PreK–8). 
  • Strong interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills. 

Preferred Qualities:

  • Understanding of and commitment to the teachings of the Catholic Church. 
  • Experience working in faith-based or private school environments. 
  • Flexibility, reliability, and a collaborative spirit. 

Working Conditions:

  • School hours are typically from 8:00 am to 3:00 pm; however, they may vary. 
  • Must be able to supervise and interact with young children for extended periods. 
  • May be called on short notice, depending on staffing needs.
