Description

TITLE: LINE SUPERVISOR

PURPOSE OF CLASSIFICATION:

The purpose of this classification is to supervise line crews in the construction and maintenance of the City’s electrical system. Employees in this classification ensure that line crews complete duties safely and in accordance with code standards.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

The following duties are normal for this position. The omission of specific statements of the duties does not exclude them from the classification if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this classification. Other duties may be required and assigned.

  • Plans and directs the establishment of power lines, necessary structures, and equipment; lays out electrical systems.
  • Constructs new lines; gains rights-of-way for building power lines and setting poles; ensures lines are clear of sewer, cable, and gas lines.
  • Maintains existing lines; obtains permission for trees to be trimmed away from power lines.
  • Supervises, directs, and evaluates assigned staff, processing employee concerns and problems, directing work, counseling, disciplining, and completing employee performance appraisals.
  • Ensures safety in work areas; trains linemen in work hazards and applicable safety precautions associated with established safety standards.
  • Maintains a thorough knowledge of equipment, materials, methods and techniques used in the construction and maintenance of power lines and related equipment.
  • Directs and assists contractors. Responds to emergency calls.
  • Operates a chain saw, automobile, hand tools, hoists, testers, or other equipment as necessary to complete essential functions.
  • Conducts safety meetings and job briefings with all employees.

ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS:

Inspects materials and vehicles. Performs other related duties as required.


Requirements

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

High school diploma or GED; supplemented by vocational training in electrical systems and structures.

Five years of experience in electrical line work, including experience as a First-Class Lineman; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job. 

Must possess and maintain a valid Kentucky driver’s license. 

Must possess First Aid/C.P.R. certification.
