Description

The Underwriting Manager is responsible for delivering leadership and direction to several teams of Underwriters, Underwriting Team Leads and Quality Control professionals responsible for providing sound decisions on a variety of loan products. The Underwriting Manager provides strategic input and leadership in decision making issues affecting the Company’s underwriting function


Essential Functions Include:

  • Develop, document and improve underwriting guidelines to ensure consistent, high quality underwriting in collaboration with Operations, Compliance, and Corporate training.
  • Ensure that underwriting      turn times and decisions are sound and within the scope of good business      practices and company policies.
  • Instruct and lead underwriting team in appropriate risk management principles and how to interpret and apply credit guidelines and procedures.
  • Identify audit finding issues and underwriting training opportunities.
  • Evaluate funding requests and escalated requests by assessing risk across multiple attributes of data and determining appropriate funding limits.
  • Ensures administrative and operational compliance with regulatory requirements and upholds Fair Lending Practices as well as credit policies and underwriting procedures.
  • Responsible for Credit, Quality Control, Appraisal Management and Risk Analysis.· 
  • Review and assess compliance and quality  outcomes identified in the various stages of underwriting reviews and develop      action plans to correct deficiencies.
  • Implement regulatory, Agency, Investor and mortgage insurer guideline changes.
  • Make recommendations to management regarding additional credit enhancements needed to make deals more acceptable.
  • Manage credit risk in a manner consistent with the loan quality targets established.
  • Provide leadership, guidance and underwriting support.
  • May perform other duties and projects as assigned.
Requirements


  • Excellent project management and strong attention to detail with the ability to prioritize, manage multiple projects and meet deadlines efficiently. 
  • Sound judgment and decision-making ability.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Exhibits a professional manner in dealing with others and works to maintain constructive working relationships.
  • Ten years of in-depth knowledge and experience in conventional mortgage loan underwriting.
  • Minimum of three years managing an underwriting team.
  • Thorough knowledge of Fannie, Freddie, FHA, VA, USDA, and private investor underwriting guidelines and procedures.
  • Knowledge of Conventional and Government automated and manual underwriting guidelines and standards.
  • Must have experience using a mortgage-based system to assist in underwriting loans. Experience with Ellie Mae Encompass, preferred.
  • Must have working knowledge of and experience with Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, PowerPoint and Excel).
  • College degree preferred. 
  • Valid FHA DE/CHUMS ID, SAR, LAPP and VA Automatic underwriting and appraisal authority preferred.
  • Proficiency with DU (Desktop Underwriter), LP (Loan Prospector), Total Scorecard and GUS, preferred.
