Medical Assistant I
Description

 Under the supervision of the Nursing Supervisor, the Medical Assistant will work in conjunction with the RN/LPNs to perform medication management for clients, perform routine medical procedures, triage, coordination of care, and to assist with detox duties including intakes, transfers and discharges as needed.   


 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS  

  1. Manages residential client medications: 
  2. Administers daily medications for residential clients within the scope of current licensure/certification; 
  3. Processes new medication orders; 
  4. Updates electronic medical records (EMR) with med changes; 
  5. Creates and print out MARS; 
  6. Orders medications for clients as needed; 
  7. Completes medication pre-authorizations as needed; 
  8. Administers controlled meds and tapers under supervision of the Nurse and as permitted by current licensure/certification 
  9. Manages medication inventory form – at both intake and discharge; 
  10. Tracks inventory of medications – checking for low supply, expiration dates, etc. 
  11. Orders and tracks all weekly routine lab orders; 
  12. Conducts residential labs – blood draws, urinalysis, etc.; 
  13. Inventories all supplies and places orders as needed; 
  14. Takes and records vital signs/daily weights/blood glucose monitoring/insulin/injections; 
  15. Updates Kitchen staff on client count/dietary needs for meals; 
  16. Coordinates care with PCP office including: 
  17. Notification letter; 
  18. Sets up follow-up PCP appointment  for after graduation; 
  19. Assists with ride/transportation coordination for medical visits; 
  20. Triages medical concerns and passes on to Nurse as indicated; 
  21. Records client file/nursing notes as appropriate in EHR system in accordance with acceptable standards; 
  22. Cleans nursing station – sweep, mop, wipe down counters, empty trash, etc.; 
  23. Contacts on-call providers as needed for medical concerns; 
  24. Gathers health information to complete intake forms with new residential clients including nutritional screenings, health history and standing orders; 
  25. Reviews medications with client at discharge and ensures client has adequate supply and understanding of meds; 
  26. Phlebotomy for routine and stat lab orders if certified; 
  27. Answer phones, review emails and responds as appropriate; 
  28. Performs other related duties as assigned. 
Requirements

 

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:  

  • High School Diploma (or equivalent)  

LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS:  

  • Current CCMA, CNA or EMT certification (for Medical Assistant II) or 

Uncertified with ability/commitment to obtain CCMA within 1-2 years (Medical Assistant I) 

  • Current BLS/First Aid/AED certification 
  • Current Oregon Food Handler’s Card (in Residential) 
  • Must maintain a valid Oregon Driver License or ability to obtain one upon hire, and be insurable under the organization’s auto liability coverage policy (minimum 21 years of age and with no Type A violations in the past 3 years, or three (3) or more Type B violations) 
  • For individuals in recovery from substance-use disorder, must have maintained continuous recovery for the previous two (2) years at the time of hire 

PREFERRED: 

  • Bilingual in English/Spanish a plus 
  • Some experience in a healthcare setting a plus

  • Proficiency in MS Office 365 (Word, Excel, Outlook), EHR databases, virtual meeting platforms, internet, and ability to learn new or updated software;

  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail, accuracy, and follow-through;

  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of privileged information in compliance with HIPAA, 42 CFR, the Employee Handbook  and all privacy and security regulations
