Description

First Things First Logistics is seeking a driven Transportation Account Developer to identify, develop, and grow freight brokerage opportunities across both new and existing customer relationships. This role is responsible for expanding Northstar's transportation footprint by uncovering freight opportunities beyond traditional waste and recycling services, identifying brokerage opportunities currently managed by third-party providers, and partnering with internal teams to maximize customer value. The ideal candidate is a proactive relationship builder with freight brokerage experience, a growth mindset, and the ability to manage opportunities from prospecting through execution. This role serves as a strategic partner to internal teams and customers, leveraging industry expertise and relationship-building skills to grow gross profit and load volume. 


The ideal candidate is a self-starter with freight brokerage sales experience, a strong understanding of transportation markets, and the ability to manage opportunities from prospecting through execution. Experience with cradle-to-grave brokerage operations and bulk transportation equipment, including tankers, is highly preferred. 


Key Responsibilities

Business Development & Sales

  • Identify and secure new freight brokerage opportunities with prospective customers across a variety of industries. 
  • Develop relationships with transportation, logistics, supply chain, and procurement decision-makers. 
  • Build and maintain a robust pipeline of profitable freight brokerage opportunities. 
  • Position Northstar Freight Team as a trusted transportation partner capable of supporting customer freight needs beyond traditional waste and recycling services. 
  • Conduct market research to identify emerging opportunities, target industries, and growth segments. 


Strategic Account Growth

  • Partner with Northstar account management, sales, and operations teams to identify untapped transportation opportunities within existing customer relationships. 
  • Expand freight volume with current customers by uncovering lanes and transportation needs not currently serviced by Northstar. 
  • Identify freight currently managed by outside brokers and develop strategies to transition those opportunities to First Things First Logistics.  


Brokerage Operations

  • Manage freight opportunities from initial prospecting through successful execution and ongoing relationship management. 
  • Develop transportation solutions that align with customer objectives while achieving profitability targets. 
  • Work closely with carrier, operations, and customer service teams to ensure service excellence and customer satisfaction. 
  • Maintain visibility into market conditions, pricing trends, and transportation capacity to support customer growth and retention. 


Internal Collaboration

  • Serve as a transportation subject matter expert and resource for internal teams. 
  • Educate and support account teams on brokerage capabilities and growth opportunities. 
  • Participate in strategic planning initiatives aimed at expanding freight brokerage revenue and market share. 
  • Foster strong partnerships across sales, operations, and leadership teams to drive business growth. 
Requirements

Qualifications

  • 3+ years of freight brokerage sales, business development, or brokerage operations experience.  
  • Demonstrated success growing gross profit and freight volume.  
  • Experience managing customer relationships and transportation solutions.  
  • Cradle-to-grave brokerage experience preferred.  
  • Experience with Transportation Management Systems (TMS), preferably MercuryGate.  
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel, including data analysis, reporting, and performance tracking.  
  • Experience utilizing workflow and project management tools such as Trello to organize and manage daily operational activities.  
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced transportation environment. 
  • Knowledge of freight markets, pricing, carrier networks, and transportation operations.  
  • Experience with bulk transportation, tanker equipment, or specialized freight is a plus.  
  • Proven ability to work independently and identify new growth opportunities. 
  • Highly self-motivated, proactive, and possesses the ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a remote team – you're a natural "go-getter."
