Job Title: Outpatient Clinical Nurse (RN or LPN)

Department: Specialty Clinic

Reports To: Director of Outpatient Services

Positions Supervised: None

Position Summary: The primary duties and responsibilities of the Outpatient Services Nurse are to work collaboratively with the Outpatient Services team to coordinate consulting physician clinics, schedule patients for outpatient clinics and other outpatient services as appropriate, provide direct patient care, and perform nursing treatments in accordance with the applicable State of Nebraska nursing scope of practice.

Performs Scheduling Functions:

  • Schedules appointments for all specialty clinic and outpatient infusions.
  • Coordinates scheduling of surgical patients and other outpatient services as needed. 
  • Prepares rooms with equipment needed for visiting providers according to their specialty.  


Assessments of Patients:

  • RN: performs assessments of patients as indicated
  • LPN: assists in the assessments of patient as indicated
  • Completes documentation as required in the EMR. 

Patient Education:

  • RN: Provides patients education for pre/post procedure or treatment and plan of care, and documents education provided.
  • LPN: Assist in providing educational documents to patients regarding their procedure or treatment and plan of care. 
  • Collaborates with surgical and/or cardiac rehab staff to provide patients with education and preps required for their procedure.
  • Assists with obtaining appropriate surgical order from the surgeon prior to the day of procedure. 

Assist and Perform Duties Assigned by Medical Provider:

  • RN: Administers medications orally, subQ, IM, IV and per central line as prescribed by medical providers. 
  • LPN: Administers medications orally, subQ, IM and IV as prescribed by medical providers.     
  • Established priorities and organizes work for efficient delivery of patient care
  • Demonstrates the ability to adapt to changes in   workload or patient assignments.

Computer Skills

  • Generation of MAR, documentation of MAR.
  • Patient admission – able to assist in admission and document steps of a patient admission according to policy.
  • Patient Transfer – able to assist in the transfer of a patient in an emergent situation and correctly completes all required transfer paperwork according to EMTALA and KCHS policy.

  • Demonstrates ethical and appropriate behavior for a healthcare environment to include, but not limited to, dignity, patient’s rights and privacy, and the maintenance of confidentiality of patient information.
  • Demonstrates caring. If unable to assist an individual in needs, offers to find someone who can.
  • Demonstrate proper telephone etiquette. If transferring a telephone call, announces the caller and briefly explains the situation before ending the transfer.
  • Always makes eye contact when speaking with patients, family members/significant others, visitors, employees, etc. Knocks before entering a room or office. Addresses all individuals courteously.
  • Keeps voice down, does not shout or use improper language. Responds to all inquiries promptly and courteously.
  • Shares information so that the people who need to be aware of the facts are informed.

Infection Control

  • Demonstrates adherence to infection control policies as evidenced by in-service attendance records and employee practices
  • Demonstrates correct hand washing technique.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) and uses same in practice.
  • Notifies the Infection Control Nurse of real or potential exposures.

Risk Management & Safety Program

  • Demonstrates adherence to risk management and safety policies and codes as evidenced by in-service attendance records and employee practices.
  • Maintains a clean and safe environment for patient and co-workers.
  • Follows all general safety rules.
  • Notified the Safety Director and/or Risk Manager of incidents involving injury or having the potential for injury.
  • Submits incident reports according to hospital policy.

Quality Improvement Activities

  • Participates in Quality Improvement activities of their department and the facility.
  • Identifies areas of improvement and communicates quality improvement ideas to their manager in order to improve the quality of care delivered to patients in their care.
  • Is a stakeholder in improvement projects, PDSA process improvement, and Root Cause Analysis discussions.

 Educational Responsibilities

  • Completes required careLearning modules
  • Attends mandatory Safety/NIMS in-services yearly
  • Completes other required certifications or classes as necessary to perform the essential functions of the job.
  • Attends staff meetings or reads and “marks as read” meeting minutes in Policy Tech 100% of the time.
Requirements

Qualifications:

Education and/or Experience:

  • Associate’s Degree or above in Nursing

Certificates, Licensure, Registrations:

  • Currently licensed as a Registered Nurse (RN) or Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) in the State of Nebraska
  • Basic Life Support (BLS)
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)
  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS)
  • Trauma Nursing Core Course (TNCC)

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Ability to work cooperatively and communicate effectively to maintain good working relationships with staff, healthcare providers, and patients
  • Must be capable of communicating clearly (reading, writing and speaking) in the English Language.
  • Must be proficient in the operation of a personal computer with Microsoft Office and the Internet
  • Must be capable of reading and comprehending complex healthcare laws and regulations.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, calculate figures and amounts.
  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished as written, oral, or schedule form. Ability to identify responses to actual or potential health conditions.
