About the Role

We are seeking an enthusiastic individual to interact directly with science center guests to facilitate their learning and experience; deliver educational programming to varied ages of students and guests; present educational demonstrations; and assist guests in having a safe, fun, and educational experience. This position requires weekend availability.

Requirements

Primary Responsibilities

  • Develop curriculum for and deliver in-person educational and public programs that appeal to a broad general audience and connect with diverse communities at the local and regional levels. 
  • Spearhead the Whitaker on Wheels outreach program by reaching out to the community, managing scheduling, and overseeing the curriculum for the programs.  
  • Travel to regional schools to deliver educational programs for preschool - middle school aged students. 
  • Represent Whitaker Center at community events.
  • Contribute to the advancement of institutional strategic priorities, and innovate programs to enliven Whitaker Center’s mission. 
  • Present educational demonstrations and programs, and provide information to students and guests.
  • Assist with coordination of special educational event days.
  • Build and maintain an appropriate knowledge of exhibit- and program-related science concepts by participating in training opportunities and independent study.
  • Collaborate with the Director of Education to maintain inventory records and alert them when supplies need to be ordered.
  • Work with the Director of Education to develop annual goals, objectives, strategic plans, and operational budget.
  • Attend departmental and all-staff meetings as directed, staying informed of the ongoing changes in department and overall organization.
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Director of Education.

Qualifications

  • Minimum Bachelor’s degree in science education or related field required.
    • Prior teaching experience necessary, preferably at the elementary or middle school level.
    • Experience in leading activities for students in Science, STEAM, or a STEAM field required.
    • Experience in developing engaging, hands-on STEAM lessons for children
  • Demonstrated ability to teach inquiry-based science in an enjoyable, engaging, hands-on manner to a wide range of audiences from Pre-K through Adult, and train others to do the same.
  • Valid PA Drivers License
  • Ability to successfully complete a Pennsylvania State Police Clearance; a Pennsylvania Child Abuse History Clearance - obtained through the Pennsylvania Department of Human Services; and a Federal Bureau of Investigation Criminal History Record Information - obtained by submitting a full set of fingerprints to the Pennsylvania State Police or its authorized agent for submission to the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
