Job Title: Director of Inpatient Nursing

Department: Acute Care

Reports To: Chief Nursing Officer

Positions Supervised: Acute Nursing staff


Position Summary:

The Director of Inpatient Nursing provides strategic, operational, and clinical leadership for inpatient nursing services, in collaboration with the CNO. This role is responsible for ensuring high-quality patient care, regulatory compliance, workforce engagement, fiscal accountability, and alignment with organizational goals. The Director collaborates with interdisciplinary leaders to improve patient outcomes, optimize throughput, and promote a culture of safety, accountability, and professional excellence.


Clinical Operations

  • Directs and oversees daily inpatient nursing operations. 
  • Ensures delivery of safe, evidence-based, patient-centered care. 
  • In coordination with the CNO, monitors clinical quality indicators, patient satisfaction, and operational performance metrics. Assists in the formulation of future plans. 
  • Implements initiatives focused on patient safety, infection prevention, and quality improvement. 
  • Collaborates with CNO, physicians and interdisciplinary teams to improve care coordination and patient outcomes. 

Leadership and Staff Development

  • In coordination with the CNO, provides leadership, coaching, and mentorship to nursing staff. 
  • Foster a positive work environment on the Acute floor that supports engagement, retention, and professional growth. 
  • Fosters collaboration with other departments to ensure excellence in care for all patients. 
  • Promotes shared governance and nursing excellence practices. 
  • Recruiting, onboarding, scheduling, and evaluating performance for nursing staff. 
  • Ensure adequate staffing for each shift to ensure optimal patient care. 
  • May perform clinical duties as needed to support the appropriate and adequate care of patients and staffing for department.

Quality and Compliance

  • Ensures compliance with all applicable state, federal, and hospital regulations. 
  • Ensures quality patient outcomes. 
  • Analyze quality data and implement corrective action plans when necessary. 

Financial and Resource Management 

  • Participates in development and management of departmental operating and capital budgets. 
  • Monitors productivity, staffing models, and overtime. 
  • Ensures efficient allocation of resources while maintaining quality standards. 
  • Participates in Strategic Planning in collaboration with the CNO.

Collaboration 

  • Works with CNO, physicians, administration, and other departments to optimize patient care and satisfaction.


Requirements

Qualifications:

Education and/or Experience:

  • Bachelor’s Degree Required 
  • Valid driver’s license 
  • Several years of clinical bedside experience combined with managerial or leadership experience required. 

Certificates, Licensure, Registrations:

  • Currently licensed as a Registered Nurse in the State of Nebraska 
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) 
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)
  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) 
  • Trauma Nurse Core Course (TNCC) 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Strong leadership and change management skills. 
  • Knowledge of inpatient operations, regulatory standards, and healthcare quality metrics. 
  • Excellent communication and relationship-building abilities. 
  • Strong conflict resolution and team development skills. 
  • Ability to work cooperatively and communicate effectively to maintain good working relationships with staff, healthcare providers, and patients 
  • Must be capable of communicating clearly (reading, writing and speaking) in the English Language. 
  • Must be proficient in the operation of a personal computer with Microsoft Office and the Internet. 
  • Proficiency with electronic health records and healthcare information systems. 
  • Must be capable of reading and comprehending complex healthcare laws and regulations.

  • Demonstrate proper telephone etiquette. If transferring a telephone call, announces the caller and briefly explains the situation before ending the transfer. 
  • Always makes eye contact when speaking with patients, family members/significant others, visitors, employees, etc. Knocks before entering a room or office. Addresses all individuals courteously. 
  • Keeps voice down, does not shout or use improper language. Responds to all inquiries promptly and courteously. 
  • Shares information so that the people who need to be aware of the facts are informed.

Infection Control

  • Demonstrates adherence to infection control policies as evidenced by in-service attendance records and employee practices 
  • Demonstrates correct hand washing technique. 
  • Demonstrates knowledge of appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) and uses same in practice. 
  • Notifies the Infection Control Nurse of real or potential exposures. 
  • Works in collaboration with Infection Control Nurse to ensure all supervised clinical staff is educated regarding appropriate PPE and infection control techniques. 

Risk Management & Safety Program

  • Demonstrates adherence to risk management and safety policies and codes as evidenced by in-service attendance records and employee practices. 
  • Maintains a clean and safe environment for patient and co-workers. 
  • Follows all general safety rules. 
  • Participates in the Safety Committee, and notifies the COO of incidents involving injury or having the potential for injury. 
  • Submits incident reports according to hospital policy. 

Quality Improvement Activities

  • Participates in Quality Improvement activities of their department and the facility. 
  • Identifies areas of improvement and communicates quality improvement ideas to their manager in order to improve the quality of care delivered to patients in their care. 
  • Is a stakeholder in improvement projects, PDSA process improvement, and Root Cause Analysis discussions.

Educational Responsibilities

  • Completes required CareLearning modules 
  • Attends mandatory Safety or Incident Management in-services, tabletops, or trainings as available 
  • Completes other required certifications or classes as necessary to perform the essential functions of the job
