The mission of the Lieber Institute for Brain Development is to translate the understanding of basic genetic and molecular mechanisms of schizophrenia and related developmental brain disorders into clinical advances that change the lives of affected individuals. We are an independent 501(c)(3) medical research institute located in the Bioscience Park on the campus of the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine and Hospital.

We are seeking an enthusiastic and self-motivated individual to join our research group. This research assistant position is open to recent college graduates seeking training and experience in a translational research setting that are planning to pursue a graduate or professional degree in science or medicine. The applicant will work collaboratively with the research group to advance ongoing projects that study how neural activity patterns in limbic and reward-related circuits contribute to behaviors that are relevant for neuropsychiatric and neurodevelopmental disorders. Current projects apply techniques using in vivo optical imaging and electrophysiology to better understand how motivated behavior is regulated. The applicant will be expected to thoughtfully conduct experiments, analyze data, and participate in experimental design. Initiative to learn new methods and perform work efficiently and carefully are essential.
Overview of Duties:
• Stereotaxic surgeries for viral transgenesis in rodent models
• Running rodent behavior tasks in touchscreen apparatus
• Confocal microscopy
• Conducting in vivo endoscopic imaging and electrophysiology experiments
• Assisting with analysis of optical imaging and electrophysiology data
• Assist in general lab support and ordering
• BA/BS in Neuroscience, Psychology, or a closely related field
• Plan to pursue graduate or professional degree in science or medicine
• Laboratory research experience
• Excellent organizational and communication skills
• Flexible work schedule (occasional weekends and evenings are required due to nature of experiments)
Special Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
• Rodent handling/behavior
• Familiarity with MATLAB

Physical Requirements for Lab position:
• Remaining in a seated or standing position for extended periods of time;

• Having the ability to receive detailed information through oral communication;
