Position Summary
The Protective Security Officer (PSO) provides armed security services in support of Social Security Administration (SSA) facilities. PSOs protect employees, visitors, facilities, and Government property through access control, screening, patrol, emergency response, Security Control Center operations, credentialing, and enforcement of established security procedures and Post Orders. Specific duties vary based on assigned post and facility.
Duties include, but are not limited to:
- Maintain thorough knowledge of and perform all duties in accordance with assigned Post Orders, contract requirements, and SSA security procedures.
- Maintain alertness and readiness while on duty and provide appropriate pass-down information to relieving officers.
- Perform access control, visitor processing, personnel/package screening, vehicle inspections, and patrol functions in accordance with Post Orders.
- Operate security equipment and systems, including x-ray machines, metal detectors, surveillance systems, electronic access controls, alarms, radios, active barriers, and other assigned equipment.
- Monitor facilities and security systems; identify and respond to suspicious persons, activities, security violations, alarms, emergencies, and safety concerns.
- Conduct interior and exterior patrols and inspect doors, gates, parking areas, security equipment, and other physical security safeguards.
- Respond to emergencies and incidents, assist employees and visitors, coordinate with first responders, and perform CPR/AED, First Aid, and other emergency-response functions as trained.
- May perform Security Control Center duties, including monitoring alarms and surveillance systems, dispatching officers, maintaining operational logs, preparing incident reports, and making required notifications.
- May perform credentialing and visitor management functions, including issuing and tracking badges, credentials, access cards, keys, and parking passes using SSA-designated systems.
- Operate SSA security and access-control systems, including PAM, PSIM, VSS/ESS, LENEL, and other Government systems, as assigned and trained.
- Safeguard Government keys, credentials, security information, equipment, and other sensitive assets.
- Maintain accurate reports, logs, records, and other required documentation.
- Provide professional assistance and direction to employees, visitors, contractors, and the public.
- Participate in required training, drills, exercises, and security-related activities.
- Perform Access Control and Screening functions for the Loading Dock at the National Support Center, as needed.
- Perform other security-related duties consistent with the assigned post, Post Orders, contract requirements, and direction of authorized Government or Contractor personnel.

To be considered for this position, candidates must meet ALL of the following requirements, and examination results must be favorable as defined by contractual standards:
Experience
- Minimum of 2 years of armed security experience within the past five years OR
- Minimum of 1 year of law enforcement experience in full-duty status with a full-service police department within the US, with a good standing resignation or retirement OR
- Minimum of 2 years of honorable service as a member of any US Armed Forces, National Guard, or Reserve service.
Education
High school diploma or GED.
Qualifications
- Must possess a valid Maryland Security Guard License and Handgun Permit
- Minimum age requirement: 21 years
- US citizenship or lawful permanent residency for current members of the U.S. Armed Services or individuals with an Honorable Discharge from the U.S. Military
- Possession of an approved Social Security Card issued by SSA
- Ability to obtain favorable verification through the E-Verify system
- Willingness to work evenings, overnights, and weekends as required
- Fluent in spoken, written, and comprehended English
- Possession of a current State-issued Driver’s License or State ID
- Proficiency with firearms
- Ability to handle common and crisis situations at the client site calmly and efficiently
- Professional demeanor and appearance

- High level of ethics and integrity.
Other Requirements
- Able to obtain and maintain SSA suitability
- Successful completion of Medical/Physical examination and Drug testing with favorable results
- Successful completion of New Hire Academy training
- Successful passing of firearms qualifications.

- Candidates must be able to:
- Stand and walk for extended periods
- Work outdoors in various weather conditions
- Work extended shifts and overtime when necessary.
