Sr. Data Scientist

Description

The Senior Data Scientist will support the Department of State (DOS), Bureau of Population, Refugees, and Migration (PRM), with advanced data analysis, statistical modeling, predictive analytics, data visualization, and data management activities. The position will analyze complex datasets to identify trends, develop forecasts, support programmatic and financial reporting, and provide data-driven insights for government officials, policymakers, and other stakeholders. The Senior Data Scientist will also support the development of databases, dashboards, data dictionaries, and analytical documentation while collaborating with stakeholders to identify business questions, establish data-driven solutions, and communicate findings to technical and nontechnical audiences.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Perform advanced data analysis and visualization, including trend analysis, predictive analysis, and forecasting. 
  • Collaborate with stakeholders to identify quantifiable questions and develop data-driven solutions. 
  • Standardize, manage, and visualize partner programmatic and financial reporting within a centralized database and dashboard environment. 
  • Support the development of a unified, data-driven understanding of global populations of concern using publicly available data and self-service humanitarian contextual dashboards. 
  • Communicate analytical findings and insights to government officials, policymakers, and the general public. 
  • Develop and maintain data management systems, databases, data dictionaries, dashboards, and supporting documentation. 
  • Support other priority data analytics and reporting requirements identified by DOS and PRM. 
  • Apply data management best practices related to data quality, security, privacy, governance, and documentation. 
  • Collaborate across organizations to establish consensus and support system authorization activities. 
  • Manage time and resources effectively while maintaining established work standards and quality requirements.


Requirements

Required Skills:

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in statistics, computer science, mathematics, data science, information systems, or a related discipline.
  • Min 5 years, 10 yr preferred of experience in data science, statistical modeling, machine learning, or a related field.
  • Proficiency in Python, R, and SQL.
  • Experience developing complex analytical models using large or complex datasets.
  • Experience performing trend analysis, predictive analysis, forecasting, statistical modeling, and data visualization.
  • Experience with Power BI, Tableau, or similar data visualization platforms.
  • Knowledge of data management best practices, including data quality, security, privacy, governance, and documentation.
  • Experience developing or maintaining databases, data management systems, data dictionaries, dashboards, and analytical documentation.
  • Experience analyzing and visualizing programmatic and financial reporting data.
  • Ability to communicate analytical findings to technical and nontechnical audiences, including government officials and policymakers.
  • Experience collaborating across organizations to define requirements, establish consensus, and support system authorization activities.
  • DOS experience is preferred, particularly supporting PRM, international affairs, humanitarian assistance, refugee affairs, or foreign policy programs.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Secret security clearance and meet DOS system-access and badging requirements.


Salary Description
$150,000 - $165,000
