OVERVIEW

The Assistant Director of Stores conducts regular store visits and leads the day-to-day activities of retail store managers in conjunction with, or in the absence of, the Director of Stores. The Assistant Director of Stores collaborates with retail store managers and is primarily responsible for driving sales and increasing profitability while coaching and developing a highly performing team committed to service in the spirit of the Society.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Management, Leadership and Employee Relations:

  • Assists managers to establish and develop a strong bench of employees capable of advancing as needed (hiring, training, development)
  • Lead support personnel in planning, development and implementation of operational improvement practices
  • Counsels, coaches and disciplines management staff
  • Monitors Performance Appraisal program for staff
  • Keeps Human Resources updated on job responsibilities for store positions
  • Maintains merchandising-presentation standards

Organizational Responsibilities:

  • Assists in managing strategic initiatives and improving business growth for realization of SVdP mission; introduces new processes and operational systems to enhance success
  • Assists with developing forecasts/budgets, monitoring sales and financials of stores and related operations
  • Assists with management of warehouse/distribution operations
  • Manages operational systems (POS system, computers, phones) in stores
  • Collaborates with Marketing for development of marketing/advertising plan, promotion ideas and implementation
  • Administers centralized purchasing of store supplies and additional product selection
  • Assists with new store development and set-up
  • Manages store building leases, contracts, maintenance/housekeeping and store relocations
  • Participates as member of executive leadership team to develop innovative ideas for growth and mission

Requirements

EDUCATION, CERTIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor’s degree Business Administration or related field preferred, or equivalent experience
  • Eight (8) years multi-unit retail or related experience that included supervisory and P&L responsibility; thrift store not-for-profit environment preferred

SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIREMENTS


Knowledge of:

  • Theories, principles, methods and procedures of Store Merchandising and Retail Sales (Advanced)
  • POS software (Advanced level)
  • QuickBooks (Preferred)
  • MS Office software (Intermediate level)

Skills and Abilities:

  • Provide hands-on leadership with majority of time spent in stores
  • Lead, motivate and empower SVdP managers to higher levels of performance and drive results
  • Think both practically (action-oriented, tactics), and strategically (analysis, use of data and numbers), both short- and long-term
  • Multi-task and complete multiple projects concurrently
  • Support, reinforce and align decisions with SVdP culture
  • Communicating effectively, orally and in writing
  • Developing, coordinating, communicating and completing projects, budgets, financial reports accurately and timely
  • Identifying, gathering, analyzing information, while developing alternative solutions to resolve problems related to stores
  • Managing P&L statements
  • Merchandising and presentation
  • Building a sales mentality
  • Organization, prioritization, decision-making, problem solving and conflict management
  • Managing public meetings

Physical:

  • Occasionally lift and/or move up to 10 pounds
  • Regularly required to sit; use hands to finger, handle or feel; reach with hands and arms; talk or hear
  • Occasionally required to stand; walk; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl
  • Frequent local travel to Stores, Conference and District sites
