The Animal Care Supervisor plays a key role in the development and success of the Animal Care Department. We are looking for someone who has interpersonal skills and understands the importance of developing meaningful relationships. The incumbent of this position must be able to inspire and motivate teamwork for achieving goals by providing education, support, and positive communication with each staff member and volunteer. This position requires an individual who can lead by example, and who is also a confident decision maker.
The successful candidate will display strong leadership ability and be able to communicate effectively with staff, volunteers, and the public. This individual will share our commitment to delivering the highest quality compassion and care to our shelter animals. This position will be expected to provide an exceptional customer experience every day and help staff understand the organization’s need for continued improvement and successful service.
Essential Job Functions:
1. Performs all tasks of Animal Care Attendants I, II, and III with proficiency and accuracy.
2. Responsible for the supervision of the Animal Care staff and volunteers. Serves as the initial point of contact for issues or concerns of the Animal Care staff and volunteers.
3. Answers team member questions, helps with team member problems, and oversees team member work for quality and guideline compliance.
4. Responsible for developing comradery and facilitating a cooperative workplace within the Animal Care departmental staff and volunteers.
5. Able to provide friendly customer service and accurate information to the public, volunteers, and co-workers in a positive, courteous, truthful and tactful manner
6. Willing to attend meetings and training sessions as required. Works with the Managers and Supervisors to create a successful team environment.
7. Assist in the hiring of new Animal Care Staff including reviewing and communicating with potential new hires for Animal Care.
8. Assist with the onboarding of new staff within Animal Care and other departments throughout the organization.
9. Lead monthly staff meetings for Animal Care.
10. Coordinate monthly Supervisor meetings within Animal Care and Operations teams.
11. Assist Animal Care Manager in creating policy/procedure changes within Animal Care.
12. Assist Animal Care Manager in writing and administering of reviews for Animal Care Staff.
13. Assist in the writing and administration of Performance Improvement Plans and disciplinary actions for Animal Care Staff.
14. Responsible for the determination of all internal animals for euthanasia under the guidelines of the Animal Behavior and Shelter Medicine Departments.
15. Performs, or assists with, the euthanasia of animals by established laws and Sacramento SPCA policy; disposes of the euthanized animal by established Sacramento SPCA procedure, maintain daily records, and maintain all cabinets containing DEA controlled substances are kept locked and secured at all times.
16. Cleans and disinfects animal cages, hallways, floors, walls, and isolation/quarantine areas throughout the shelter.
17. Responsible for feeding, watering, walking and exercising all shelter animals daily.
18. Responsible for daily and periodic checks regarding animal health, safety, cleanliness and overall well-being and reporting any significant problems immediately Shelter Medical Team.
19. Must be punctual and maintain regular, predictable attendance.
20. Must be committed to a high standard of safety and be willing and able to comply with all safety laws and all of the employer’s safety policies and rules and must be willing to report safety violations and potential safety violations to appropriate management personnel.
21. Assist Shelter Medicine Team with the distribution of various medical and observation charts, medication, and feeding procedures.
22. Assist the Animal Behavior, Rescue and Foster departments in the transferring of animals in their absence.
23. Assist in maintaining the inventory of Animal Care.
24. Communicate with public or outside agencies involving Animal Care.
25. Assist in examining and processing all internal animals received at the Sacramento SPCA, which includes properly completing necessary paperwork.
26. Assist in the administration of vaccinations, treatments, medications, and completes preliminary physical examinations designated by the Shelter Medicine Team.
27. Assist with the behavior evaluation of all internal dogs and cats under the guidelines of the Animal Behavior Department.
28. Supports Animal Care Manager and performs management duties when manager is absent or out of office.
29. Serves as backup for other SSPCA departments and is able to fill in for Essential Team Members of other departments when needed.

5. Assists with tours, lectures, public education programs, fundraising activities, and special events as needed.
6. Displays constant professionalism and models the standard of conduct for all employees.
7. Will be asked to attend monthly Department meetings and attend continuing education training sessions.
8. Have the ability to recognize opportunities to assist other staff members in their growth and advancement in the organization.
9. Works with our Spay and Neuter clinic in maintaining a regular and accurate alteration schedule.
10. Must be punctual and maintain regular, predictable attendance.
11. May work either day or evening shift. As the closing supervisor, ensures all buildings are secured, locked, and all alarms set before exiting the shelter’s campus.
12. Attend outside Supervisory and Management continuing education to assist in your growth in the organization.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
1. Advanced animal care knowledge of domestic animals including breeds, behavior, appropriate care and housing, common health problems, disease symptoms and handling techniques.
2. Must be able to work independently, and able to manage own workload regularly.
3. Ability to read and comprehend instructions, short correspondence, and memos.
4. Basic computer skills using standard office programs such as Word or similar programs.
5. Ability to write reports and correspondence.
6. Ability to effectively present information in one on one and small group situations to customers, clients and other employees of the organization.
7. Valid California Driver’s license with a clean driving record for at least one year before receiving an application.
Education and Experience:
1. High school graduate or GED equivalent.
2. Associate's degree in a related field is preferred. Relevant experience may be substituted for education.
3. At least two years of supervisory experience required.
4. One year related animal care experience in an animal shelter or veterinary hospital is required.
5..Required to have a California State Euthanasia Certification or ability to obtain within six months of employment.
1. Any allergic condition that would be aggravated by exposure or through contact with animals or chemicals used to sanitize facilities, vehicles or equipment, may be a disqualification.
2. Must stand, walk, bend and frequently stoop to perform duties. Have the ability to perform prolonged strenuous physical activity, including lifting and carrying objects weighing up to 50 pounds alone or up to 100 pounds with the help of fellow employees for short distances.
3. At times must chase or run after animals that have escaped confinement.
1. You may be exposed to hostile or abusive members of the public. Must be able to deal with an often emotion-charged public and carry a fast-paced and changing workload which at times can be stressful.
2. By nature of the industry, there may be occasional exposure to dead, injured, sick, unruly, vicious, and dangerous animals in addition to exposure to parasites and infectious diseases.
3. Must be available and willing to work weekends, holidays approved overtime, and attend mandatory training and meetings as the employer determines are necessary or desirable to meet its business needs
