Norfolk Hardware & Home Center is  searching for a self-starting Assistant Retail Sales Manager for our location in Mattapan, on the corner of Gallivan Blvd & Morton St.  We are looking for a retail professional that upholds and exemplifies the company core values of quality, service and integrity to create total customer satisfaction.

In this role, you will utilize your Retail, Building Materials, & Hardware experience to oversee the daily operations and staff of a high-volume home improvement store. You must have excellent communication skills, know how to lead a team, the ability to motivate sales floor personnel to sell. You must be a team player and believe in hands on management with a focus on customer satisfaction.

In the role, you will be responsible for:

  • Uphold and exemplify the company's core values of quality, service and integrity to create total customer satisfaction.
  • Work with the management team to achieve sales, margins and profit goals by performing daily store management procedures such as opening/closing of store; completing daily paperwork; assisting with requests from other stores; and helping to implement corporate goals, policies and standards.
  • Support store operations regarding retail inventory by monitoring store inventory, making inventory counts, accurately entering merchandise receipts, inventory transfers, by stocking merchandise; and by preparing weekly fill ins.
  • Ensures that exceptional store standards are being met by maintaining store cleanliness, backroom maintenance, overall general store maintenance and by keeping updates and well executed merchandise display.
  • Participates in store selling efforts by personally assisting customers in the selection and purchase of merchandise; demonstrates products, emphasizing features and benefits; answers customer questions on sales floor or by phone on product      information, delivery information and care of products.
  • Is responsible for continuous personal improvement and for increasing overall store productivity by achieving dollars per transaction and units per transaction in sales.
  • Manage all store employees to be productive and attentive to customer needs. 
  • Manage floor help to optimize ordering, receiving of orders, stocking of orders and down stocking as well as general maintenance inside and outside the building on a daily basis. 
  • Inform the store manager of any employee performance issue as soon as they are known. 
  • Adhere to Norfolk Hardware and Norfolk Kitchen and Bath standards and follow the regulations in the Norfolk Hardware and Norfolk Kitchen and Bath Employee Handbook.  
  • Work with Retail Sales Manager regarding issues of customer dissatisfaction or associate performance.      
  • Train and educate associates on products, sales techniques to achieve store goals.
  • In absence of Store Manager, acts as supervisor assigning and directing work addressing complaints and resolving problems for store employees.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of the products sold by hardware and home center store
  • Able to think and act quickly to resolve any conflicts or problems in a professional manner
  • Strong communication skills (oral, listening and written) to be able articulate directions, information and answer questions 
  • Able to connect and motivate staff to focus on high level of service and employee retention
  • Self-motivated and willing to continue with own professional development
  • Organized and able to manage multiple priorities
  • Knowledgeable of merchandising concepts to drive sales
  • Able to work harmoniously with all customers (internal and external)

Education and Experience

  • Minimum of 4 years of Retail Management experience in diverse, fast-paced environment
  • Work experience in the hardware, paint, lumber or building materials industry
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Prior experience working with an ERP system and Microsoft Office (outlook, Word and basic Excel) 
  • Bi-lingual a plus

Physical Demands/Work Environment

  • Must be able to work weekends.
  • Regularly required to talk and hear through customer interactions.
  • Noise level for the work environment is quiet to noisy. 
  • Occasionally exposed to outside weather conditions.
  • Frequently lift and or move up to 50lbs and occasionally lift and or move up to 100lbs with assistance. 
  • Occasionally required to stoop, bend, kneel or crouch while working 
  • Frequently required to walk to and from various areas within the facility.
  • Occasionally exposed to moving mechanical parts in or near the operation of vehicles or equipment in the store, plant, yard and warehouse areas. 
  • Neat, professional in appearance.
  • Able to walk, bend, stand on even and uneven surfaces
  • Ability to learn the operation to use a fork truck safely
  • Able to climb (ladders, trucks)
  • Required Safety Equipment as Needed: Work shoes, safety glasses and/or protective gloves
