Your Impact

The Staff Accountant helps to ensure that Habitat Greater San Francisco maintains accurate financial reports, records, and general ledgers; prepares and analyzes budgets; and performs general bookkeeping in accordance to Generally Accepted Accounting Practices (GAAP). 


Primary Responsibilities

Payroll (50%)

  • Accountable for collecting timekeeping information, incorporating a variety of deductions for bi-weekly payroll run.
  • Accountable for issuing pay and pay-related information to employees.
  • Accountable for managing direct deposits, benefits withholding, payroll deductions, garnishments and levies, flexible spending accounts, federal and state payroll tax updates.
  • Assists the Controller with all payroll tax and payroll related items within the payroll system.
  • Accountable for year-end payroll process, including any tax filings (with assistance from the controller), W-2 processing, etc.

General Accounting (45%)

  • Supports accounts payable activities and timeliness of invoice creation in accordance with finance policies and procedures.
  • Assists the Controller with construction job cost allocations.
  • Processes cash receipts, record revenue and receivables.
  • Works closely with the Fund Development Team to collect donor documentation and ensure that donation revenues and receivables are reconciled monthly, quarterly, and annually.
  • Responsible for monthly reconciliation and journal entries from mortgage servicing reports.
  • Responsible for monthly reconciliation and journal entries of monthly and quarterly bank statements.
  • Prepare assigned annual audit schedules and assist with annual tax compliance; assists the Controller with responding to auditor inquiries.
  • Maintains an effective filing and records management system.
  • Assists Controller and CFO with annual budgeting process.
  • Organizes and manages insurance requests, payments and inquiries.
  • Reconciles benefit payments and maintains vendor files and relationships
  • Participates in accounting and finance trainings and professional development opportunities and on occasion provides support at Habitat events.
  • Works with the Controller to develop, implement, and maintain updated accounting procedures.

Ad hoc (5%)

  • Provides ad hoc financial information to CFO, the Controller and other departments as needed.
  • Contributes to surprise cash counts, bank deposits and/or change requests monthly for Restore.


  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or Business Administration
  • Minimum of two years of work experience in accounting and/or finance
  • Excellent organizational and written communication skills. Close attention to detail and a can-do attitude.
  • Experience with Sage 300 CRE (Timberline) is a plus
  • Not-for-profit and/or Construction experience is a plus
  • Must be able to pass background check. (In accordance with state and county law: convictions do not necessarily rule out employment, it depends on the nature and severity of the conviction and is evaluated on a case by case basis, check is conducted on last 7 years only)
