Alliance for Safety and Justice (ASJ) is a national advocacy organization that aims to replace ineffective criminal justice system policies with what works to keep people safe. We represent diverse crime survivors as well as people living with old records as key public safety stakeholders. ASJ brings our members together with state leaders and coalition partners to win reforms that stop cycles of crime, reduce costly incarceration, and make communities safer. Position Summary

The CSSJ Events & Community Manager will join a fast-paced team working to reform state criminal justice policy and transform the dialogue on crime, safety, and incarceration. Through Crime Survivors for Safety and Justice and TimeDone, ASJ has 140,000 online and offline members across the country and partnerships with dozens of service providers and reform organizations to grow the movement for reform.   


Our events, held nationally and in key states, are a vital tool for member connectivity, movement and coalition building, public education, and our advocacy campaigns. The CSSJ Events & Community Manager will work closely with ASJ’s CSSJ, State Advocacy, TimeDone, Communications and Operations divisions to plan and execute events that drive our goals forward, including but not limited to national convenings, town halls, forums, chapter meetings, conferences, trainings, and meetings with key stakeholders. Primary Responsibilities

Event Project Management, Administration & Info Sharing (40%)

  • Create and manage an events calendar for ASJ; develop and implement events protocols, planning tools, tracking mechanisms and communications related to events for staff and members. 
  • Ensure appropriate note taking and/or tracking of event outcomes and impact, and follow up items; incorporate evaluations into adjusting planning or event execution.  
  • Oversee project management systems and coordination for all ASJ events; work with Operations staff to ensure alignment with org-wide Operational procedures.
  • Negotiate contracts, costs, and services with vendors including but not limited to: book event space, arrange food and beverage, order all supplies/decorations, and coordinate audiovisual equipment and operations.
  • Keep track of event finances including payment requests, invoicing, and reporting; prepare and modify event contracts, as needed.
  • Assist with preparing event budgets and provide periodic progress reports to directors for each event.

Event Planning (40%)

  • Lead event planning and management for ASJ events, including managing and ensuring quality and effective execution of all logistics, timelines, run of show and tasks associated with events; ensure events are seen through in alignment with the organization’s vision, mission and values.
  • Supervise the Senior CSSJ Events & Community Associate; provide consistent coaching and support on a weekly basis.
  • Support the organization’s directors and/or the development team in identifying event goals and needs, including graphic design, production, printing, logistics, and event marketing.
  • Support collection of event-related data to assist in post-event evaluations and reporting.
  • Develop processes and procedures for all organizational events; provide staff training as identified. 
  • Coordinate across divisions to ensure relevant input and resources are leveraged to maximize event success and consistency with strategic organizational imperatives and messaging.
  • Work with the Senior Manager, CSSJ, National Director, CSSJ and CSSJ staff to manage staff/volunteers supporting events.
  • Liaise with vendors and contractors to fulfill event and organization needs. 
  • Facilitate regular event planning meetings with internal staff. 
  • Maintain adequate event supplies and equipment inventory for the CSSJ division. 

Community Advocacy (20%)

  • Advance CSSJ campaign goals in collaboration with staff by planning and supporting state and local events that build and strengthen the community and movement of survivors of crime. 
  • Provide strategies for pre and post event member engagement; work in partnership with CSSJ Statewide Managers,  membership engagement staff, and State Advocacy staff to design and implement these strategies at events. 
  • Educate and share advocacy knowledge and events initiatives with the CSSJ team; support CSSJ by executing state and local CSSJ events to build community and advance campaign goals.


Requirements

Qualifications  

  • 5+ years experience managing events; experience managing events for a national organization preferred
  • Strong people manager with supervision and coaching experience 
  • Self-starter who is flexible, creative, able to work under pressure, and able to work quickly and cooperatively on multiple projects at once
  • Well-organized and  strong attention to detail; results oriented 
  • Strong interpersonal skills; experience working on diverse teams and with diverse communities
  • Experience hiring and managing vendors for event production
  • Experience reviewing, negotiating and securing contracts 
  • Administration, project, and budget management experience
  • Experience preparing event reports, surveys, debriefings
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Experience working in a nonprofit advocacy or campaign organization with a commitment to social justice and racial justice preferred
  • A “people-person” and keen listener with a track record of successful community building

Working Conditions & Physical Demands

  • Option to remote telecommute.
  • Regular travel required.
  • Occasional weekend assignments may be required.
  • Requires use of a desktop, laptop, or video display terminal.
  • Requires routine physical movements with limited physical exertion.
  • Ability to communicate, receive and understand information through oral and written communication and proofread and check documents for accuracy.
  • Requires communicating information with co-workers, stakeholders and/or the public; reading correspondence, instructions and/or technical documents; writing correspondence and/or reports and filling in forms.
