Orchestra Librarian
Description

The Orchestra Librarian is a crucial member of the operations department and is responsible for obtaining, preparing, distributing, maintaining, and cataloging printed music for all concert programs.  The Orchestra Librarian works very closely with the Artistic Director, Artistic Partners, guest conductors, concertmaster and other musician leaders to research and prepare all music for rehearsals and performances.  The position assists the marketing and communications staff in proofreading concert program listings and instrumentation for style and content.  The Orchestra Librarian reports to the Orchestra Manager and partly supervises the Operations Assistant in supporting library functions.


Primary Responsibilities:Obtains printed music to meet program needs of the Orchestra, its ensembles and the choral groups that

perform with it in accord with the provisions of the Master Agreement as directed by the Orchestra

Manager, Artistic Director, Artistic Partners, guest conductors and members of the Artistic Vision

Committee.

Responsible for the preparation of music for performance, marking parts according to materials provided by Artistic Partners, guest conductors, concertmaster, and principals.

Assembles orchestra folders for each concert program at least two weeks before the first rehearsal, and has the music available to the musicians as required by the Master Agreement.

Catalogs music owned by the SPCO and maintains the library catalog as part of the OPAS database.

Requirements

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s Degree, preferably in music, or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Minimum three years orchestra library experience
  • Computer skills required; Word, Excel, Access, Outlook; OPAS experience preferred.
  • Familiarity with orchestra music and parts, instrumentation, ranges, and foreign language terms.
  • Ability to read scores, and copy and transpose parts.
  • Extensive knowledge of orchestral repertoire and music publishers
  • Knowledge of binding and photocopier equipment.
  • A working knowledge of U.S. and international copyright law.
  • Must have ability to successfully pass a criminal background check.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Ability to communicate effectively (in English) verbally and in writing to obtain, prepare, distribute and maintain printed music for concerts.
  • Ability to copy orchestra parts cleanly and legibly using manuscript paper and/or computer assisted software.
  • Ability to work independently, as well as part of a team.
  • Ability to work effectively within deadlines.
  • Ability to adapt to a fast paced, rapidly changing environment.
  • Outstanding interpersonal skills including the ability to interact with all staff in a professional, confidential, timely, and tactful manner.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds regularly.
  • Ability to work flexible and late hours, and to provide your own transportation to SPCO concert venues as needed
