NewFields is seeking an Environmental Scientist with experience in Remedial Investigation/Feasibility Studies (RI/FS) and Natural Resource Damage Assessment (NRDA) to join our hardworking and innovative team of scientists and engineers. The appropriate candidate has an environmental chemistry background and can support a team of specialists across several disciplines (e.g., chemistry, biology, sediments, oceanography) working for public and private sector clients.


The ideal candidate can work independently and contribute to growing our practice by expanding business opportunities. In addition, the candidate should have the necessary technical background and experience to perform NRDAs and Remedial Investigations in accordance to current guidelines, including review of chemistry data for baseline determination; injury determination and quantification using various models; and the ability to effectively communicate with clients and natural resource trustees. You will play a lead role in building new client relationships, enhancing existing client relationships, planning and scoping new projects, and ensuring our work is executed with the highest standards.


Reporting to the NewFields Sediment Management & Marine Sciences Partners, you will collaborate closely with the rest of our science and engineering team, as well as our 17 other NewFields office locations. You will be ready to tackle any complex issues thrown your way, while maintaining a positive attitude and an eye towards the future of the business.

Our Edmonds, WA office is is south of Seattle and located in scenic Downtown Edmonds, close to the ferry terminal and Brackett's Landing Beach Park.


Requirements

  

Education: A Master’s or Bachelor’s degree in environmental or civil engineering. Candidate must also already have achieved Professional Engineer (P.E.) status.

Licensing: Current P.E. license in Washington, Oregon, and/or California, or ability to obtain P.E. licenses in these states.

Experience: A minimum of at least ten years of progressively increasing engineering-related experience.

Software - Position requires applicant to have working knowledge of Microsoft Office© software and design software. Experience with Autodesk® Civil 3D® is preferred. Working knowledge of various types of numerical modeling software is advantageous.

Physical Demands: Position requires sitting/standing for long periods of time, extended hours working on a computer and lifting up to 30 pounds. Field assignments can be in a variety of environments and cultures, including difficult and diverse climates. During field assignments, standing, squatting, bending, and lifting up to 30 pounds may be required over prolonged periods of time.

Potential Travel: Travel to project sites located in the United States, and abroad. It is expected approximately 80-90% of work time will be spent within the home office of the individual.

  

Position Responsibilities:

Project Management, Field Work, Client Deliverable Development – 70%

  • Support large engineering design projects and lead small engineering design projects including, development of design drawings, technical specifications, design reports, technical memoranda, project manuals, and performing contract administration tasks. The objective of many of the projects will involve designing environmental restoration and remediation of contaminated sediment sites. 
  • Provide support and/or supervision for environmental investigations/studies, including planning, implementation, analysis, interpretation, and reporting aspects.
  • Interpret engineering and environmental data to develop conclusions and/or achieve established objectives.
  • Work with a variety of scientists (particularly chemists and oceanographers) to devise creative and effective means to mitigate various contaminants in ongoing sources to aquatic environments and sediments to achieve regulatory compliance.
  • Supporting other Project Managers through application of various technical and writing skills to achieve established project-specific objectives.
  • Participating in NewFields’ projects acquired and managed by others, as needed.
  • Preparing quality technical products under your supervision (or as assigned) on-time, measured by internal or external client satisfaction.

Networking, Marketing, and Business Development – 30%

  • Support and lead marketing and proposal efforts for sediment Remedial Investigation/Feasibility Studies (RI/FS), remedial design, and construction oversight.
  • Create, budget, design client proposals; present proposals to existing and new clients.
  • Mentor staff, including Engineers in Training (EITs).
  • Interact with other NewFields’ offices; promote cross-discipline collaboration.
