Manager, Federal Grassroots Advocacy

The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, the world’s largest organization of food and nutrition professionals, is seeking a Manager, Federal Grassroots Advocacy in our Washington D.C. office. This high performing mid-level professional will work to advance the Academy’s public policy agenda by supporting and further developing grassroots infrastructure that expands organizational capacity and outcomes. This position is the policy and advocacy connection between the Academy and affiliate and DPG/MIG policy efforts, including training members on effective advocacy for all levels of government. 


Responsibilities:

  • Organize, manage and lead federal grassroots advocacy campaigns for Academy stakeholders, including affiliates, DPG/MIGs, committees, leadership and the general membership. 
  • Define parameters of campaign and manages communications, outreach and coordination with federal public policy panel positions. 
  • Coordinate federal policy affinity groups, including follow up support such as dissemination of training materials, issue education or advocacy resources. 
  • Coordinate and deliver advocacy education and training for federal issues. Work with public policy panel leaders to advocate with policymakers and elected officials. 
  • Develop the federal portion of the Professional Development and Training Plan and coordinate with the state grassroots advocacy manager on the scheduling, monitoring and execution of meetings and events. 
  • Work with senior staff to review, compile and disseminate regulatory dockets for Academy response. Work with internal staff      across the Academy and solicit input from Academy experts to respond to      regulatory opportunities. 
  • Manage policy issue areas, including the building and maintenance of relationships with relevant hill offices, policy research and resource development and regulatory docket response. 
Requirements

  

· A bachelor’s degree in food and nutrition, dietetics, political science or public health with an emphasis in nutrition or public policy or a related field required, plus one year of academic training. 

· RDN/DTR credential and certification and advanced training in grassroots advocacy and project management desirable

· 3-4 years of relevant, demonstrated experience managing legislation and/or government relations and advocacy

· Knowledge of and interest in political processes and public policy processes are desired

· Excellent written and verbal communication skills

· Able to organize and manage multiple projects simultaneously

· Self-starter and team player

· Strong strategic thinking and interpersonal skills 


This position is located in our Washington, D.C. office.
