Principal Mechanical Engineer

Position Description:

As a member of the SetPoint Medical Product Development group, the Principal Mechanical Engineer will be responsible for leading the design of mechanical and electromechanical products and systems. They will be expected to:


Position Responsibilities:

  • Interactively working with all aspects of the company to develop engineering specifications, prototypes, and designs.
  • Apply principles of mechanics, thermodynamics, heat transfer, and materials in the design of mechanical and electromechanical systems.
  • Aid in the development process by ensuring designs are cost efficient, manufacturable, and reliable.
  • Assure system and product quality by developing and executing test plans.
  • Generate and maintain technical documentation required to support regulatory submissions.
  • Provide technical direction to multi-disciplinary engineering teams developing multiple products to bring prototypes to commercial readiness. Advocate for and allocate resources across a portfolio.
  • Prototype mechanical designs using in-house tools and support from vendors, including integration with a variety of electronic components.
  • Identify and qualify key vendors producing mechanical prototypes.
  • Perform failure analysis of mechanical aspects of designs.
  • Drive exploratory and speculative research projects in a fail-fast mindset.
  • Work with cross-functional teams to define mechanical specifications based on system-level requirements and tradeoffs.
  • Validate product and process quality by designing testing methods; testing finished- product and process capabilities; establishing standards; confirming manufacturing processes.
  • Supports manufacturing operations both on and off-site by designing and conducting research programs; applying knowledge of product design, fabrication, assembly, tooling, and materials; conferring with equipment vendors; soliciting observations from operators.
  • Develops manufacturing processes by studying product requirements; researching, designing, modifying, and testing manufacturing methods and equipment; conferring with equipment vendors.
  • Maintains professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops; reviewing professional publications; establishing personal networks; participating in professional societies.


Minimum Qualifications:

The ideal Principal Mechanical Engineering candidate will have 10+ years of design engineering experience. Also required are proficiency at:

  • Requirements Analysis, Design Skills, Quality focus.
  • Knowledge of medical design standards, techniques and testing.
  • Assembly of complex electromechanical systems.
  • Use of 3D CAD modeling software to generate component and assembly drawings.
  • Knowledge of Design for Manufacturing and Assembly techniques.
  • General knowledge of machining, welding, and molding practices.

A BS degree in Mechanical Engineering or related curriculum is required and an MS degree is preferred.
