Description

The VP of People and Culture provides tactical and strategic leadership of the organization’s employment life cycle with a focus on diversity and work-life balance. The VPPC leads and directs a team that proactively develops and implements human resources and initiatives in support of the organization’s strategy to create a work culture where all staff members have the opportunity to thrive, have their voices heard, and be successful in their roles. As a member of the Executive team, the VPPC works with stakeholders across the organization to champion and actively engage a culture of diversity, equity, and inclusion through the innovation of and adherence to policies, programs, and practices focused on work-life balance. The position demands broad HR management knowledge and will directly supervise a team of staff members ensuring the timely delivery of people operations internally. Periodic travel to participate in meetings and training across Western Washington is required. This is a regular, full-time position and a requirement to being or becoming a WA resident.

Essential Functions: 

  1. Acts as the senior level advisor across all levels of the organization providing strategic direction and tactical delivery, consultation and resolution of human resource, employee diversity, and benefits issues.
  2. Leads and develops a cohesive team focused on all aspects of human resources including employee diversity, equity, and inclusion strategies, 
  3. Simplify and amplify best practice policies, procedures and programs that inspire development of staff cultural competencies, core and leadership competencies, and organizational imperatives.
  4. Drive transformational organization effectiveness and employee engagement through research-based talent management practices and utilizing effective change management initiatives. 
  5. Actively participate as a member of the CEO’s leadership team and contribute to both short- and long-term planning of organizational development, people operations, and employee diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives.
  6. Lead the development of and implement action plans to drive a culture of equity and inclusion throughout the organization. 
  7. Develop and institutionalize people practices the foster inclusive and equitable meeting and decision-making practices. 
  8. Participate in meetings and committees advocating for Human Resources objectives that demonstrate diversity of thought and awareness. 
  9. Maintain up to date knowledge of local, state and federal laws and best practices keeping the organization’s policies, procedures and programs compliant. 
  10. Actively participate in external and internal networking opportunities seeking out emerging HR and diversity methodologies.
  11. Attend Board of Director’s meetings as needed to provide insight and offer solutions. 
  12. Act with integrity and honesty to investigate, manage and fairly resolve employee relations issues ensuring timely and accurate submission of data to the EEOC, GUSUSA and federal or state Department of Labor. 
  13. Travel across western Washington to meet with staff and/or train as needed.
  14. Perform other projects and duties as assigned.
  15. In addition to the above, performs other duties as assigned. 


Management Responsibilities: The VP of People & Culture position directly supervises employee(s) and carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning and directing work; coaching and monitoring performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; and addressing complaints and resolving problems. Approval for timesheets, vacation request and expenses of direct reports. Develop, plan and prepare the budget and strategic operations for the Human Resources and Diversity functions with measurable results that align with overall business objectives.

Requirements

Education Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree, (Master’s degree preferred) in a related field or equivalent combination of work and education experience


Experience Required:

  • A minimum of five years’ of progressively responsible experience in human resources or related field 
  • A minimum of three years’ experience leading or managing a human resources/payroll/diversity department


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge and professional experience in planning and policy, selection, compensation, benefits, training and staff development, employee relations, and performance management; SPHR, SHRM- SCP or similar certification desirable
  • Current knowledge and understanding of regulations, industry trends, current practices, new developments, and applicable laws regarding human resources
  • Actively participates in the development of environments that foster diversity, equity, inclusion, and access through words, actions, and attitude
  • Willingness and ability to demonstrate a commitment to support the organization’s efforts to enhance diversity, equity and inclusion across our teams and communities we serve
  • Strong interpersonal and collaboration skills with the ability to positively resolve conflict
  • Ability to maintain a positive attitude, even when faced with misplaced criticism or frustration
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills, both written and oral to ensure effective interactions with individuals at all levels and backgrounds
  • Ability to make good judgments and lead multiple organization-wide projects with competing priorities
  • Ability to work with culturally and racially diverse groups
  • Proficient in MS O365 and comfort working with HRIS and payroll systems (Paylocity preferred)
  • Demonstrated ability to multitask, prioritize and meet deadlines, work independently, take initiative and maintain a high-degree of confidentiality
  • Willingness and ability to travel to all regional offices within Western Washington on occasion
  • Have and maintain a good driving record with the ability to operate in a constant state of alertness
  • Valid Washington State driver’s license, vehicle in working condition, proof of insurance, and the ability to fulfill timely and extensive travel requirements across widespread regional geography
  • Satisfactory results from criminal background search
