Chinese Mutual Aid Association (CMAA) is a fast-paced, community-based, 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, dedicated to fostering the integration of the low-income, Pan-Asian immigrant and refugee community into the United States. Established in 1981, CMAA has been a cornerstone of the Uptown community, providing programming for generations of low-income youth, adults, and senior citizens. We offer direct services, including afterschool & youth mentorship programming, job training & placement, elder care services, and social services such as citizenship & housing services.


Job Description


Chinese Mutual Aid Association (CMAA) seeks a mission-driven Literacy Associate to support our Adult Education programming. The Literacy Associate will growing and coordinating our Adult Volunteer Literacy program through volunteer cultivation, tutor-learner matching, and data reporting. This person will demonstrate skills in data collection, analysis, and reporting; cross-cultural communication; client-centered service; administrative filing, and a commitment to working with immigrant and refugee populations

Requirements

Essential Functions & Responsibilities

Volunteer Tutor Recruitment & Support

  • Conduct outreach to recruit and onboard new volunteer tutors using various communication channels (e.g.,
  • email, tabling, flyering, digital outreach).
  • Coordinate tutor onboarding, including initial intake, orientation, and training workshops.
  • Develop and maintain tutor support resources, including a tutor handbook and curated ESL resource lists.
  • Plan and execute tutor in-service professional development and appreciation events.


Learner Recruitment & Support

  • Conduct learner outreach and intake, including registration, placement assessment, and matching with tutors.
  • Support the matching process between tutors and learners based on needs, availability, and learning goals.
  • Administer standardized assessments in compliance with grant guidelines and testing protocols.
  • Coordinate with student support staff and program coordinators/managers to develop student support
  • resources.


Program Administration & Data Management

  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date volunteer and learner data in CMAA’s database and spreadsheets and their
  • physical files
  • Assist with quarterly and annual grant reporting, ensuring alignment with ICCB and SOS grant requirements.
  • Support budget monitoring and alignment with program activities when needed.
  •  Support monitoring visit reports and participate in program monitoring visits.


Communication & Stakeholder Engagement

  • Maintain regular communication with tutors, learners, and partner organizations.
  • Respond to inquiries and provide referrals to external services when appropriate.
  • Represent CMAA at professional development events and network meetings.


Collaboration & Strategic Support

  •  Collaborate with Adult Education (ICCB) and Citizenship (NAI) teams to enhance integration and support across
  • programs.
  • Identify opportunities for program growth, resource sharing, and community partnerships.


Qualifications

  • A bachelor’s degree in a relevant field (required)
  • 1 year of experience teaching adults with limited English proficiency
  • Experience managing multiple projects and stakeholders to efficiently meet deadlines and deliverables
  • Ability to work both independently and as a team member, demonstrating cultural sensitivity to constituents
  • Experience managing multiple projects and a demonstrated ability to adhere to deadlines, particularly in regards
  • to analyzing data
  • Proficiency with Google platforms, Microsoft Office, especially Excel/Google Sheets
  • Fluency in a second language preferred, but not required


Work Environment

  • This job operates in a clerical, office setting. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets, and fax machines. 
  • Occasional evenings and weekends are required

Physical Demands

  • This is a largely sedentary role, however, some filing is required.  This could require the ability to lift files, open filing cabinets, and bend or stand on a stool as necessary.

The salary range for this position is $38,000 to $42,000.00 annually. Please note that the indicated base salary is

provided in good faith estimate for the position at the time of posting. Final compensation may vary based on factors

including but not limited to education, experience, knowledge, skills, etc.
