GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

The Facilities Assistant supports the safe, clean, and well-maintained operation of assigned ECS4Kids Head Start centers. This role performs routine maintenance, minor repairs, and preventive upkeep to ensure facilities, playgrounds, and grounds meet health, safety, and regulatory standards and support high-quality services for children, families, and staff.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Perform general maintenance and minor repairs across assigned centers, including carpentry, drywall, painting, doors, windows, flooring, and fixtures.
  • Assist with preventive maintenance activities to extend the life of buildings, playgrounds, and equipment.
  • Support basic maintenance of plumbing, electrical, HVAC, and mechanical systems under appropriate supervision.
  • Conduct routine inspections of facilities and playgrounds; identify safety hazards and report needed repairs or code concerns.
  • Assist with monitoring and testing building safety systems (e.g., fire extinguishers, alarms) and communicate issues promptly.
  • Support special projects such as room set-ups, minor renovations, lawn and grounds care, and vehicle upkeep.
  • Safely use and maintain hand and power tools (e.g., drills, saws, wrenches, hammers) and follow all safety procedures.
  • Document maintenance requests, work performed, and materials used using logs or electronic systems.
  • Maintain a clean, organized work area and properly store tools and materials.
  • Interact professionally with staff, children, families, vendors, and the public.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Requirements

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • · High School Diploma or GED required.
  • · Vocational training or coursework in one or more skilled trades (e.g., maintenance, HVAC, electrical, plumbing) preferred.
  • · One (1) year of facilities, maintenance, or related experience is preferred.

SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, AND ABILITIES:

  • · Working knowledge of building maintenance and repair practices.
  • · Basic understanding of safety standards, hazard prevention, and use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • · Ability to read instructions, follow procedures, and maintain accurate records.
  • · Effective oral and written communication skills.
  • · Strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize and multitask in a fast-paced environment.
  • · Mechanical aptitude and problem-solving ability.
  • · Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and exercise sound judgment.
  • · Tact, professionalism, and customer-service orientation when working with diverse populations

CERTIFICATIONS:

  • · Valid driver’s license and proof of automobile insurance required.
  • · Satisfactory driving record in accordance with ECS Vehicle Driving Policy.
  • · Ability to complete required background checks.
  • · Completion of a minimum of 15 hours of in-service or professional development training annually (July 1–June 30).

ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:

  • · Work is performed primarily in early childhood education settings and on facility grounds.
  • · Regular travel between multiple sites is required.
  • · Work may include evenings, nights, or weekends based on operational needs or emergencies.

ESSENTIAL PHYSICAL SKILLS:

  • · Ability to see and hear with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • · Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
  • · Frequent standing, walking, bending, stooping, climbing, balancing, and reaching.
