Position Overview
The Conversion Engineer owns the end-to-end migration of client financial, client, and matter data from legacy legal systems into our legal accounting platform. Data conversion is the most technically complex and risk-sensitive component of implementation, directly impacting go-live success, revenue recognition, and client confidence.
This role requires deep expertise in relational databases, financial data structures, and structured data transformation within legal environments. The Conversion Engineer operates with a high degree of independence and is accountable for the accuracy, timeliness, and technical integrity of every migration.
Primary Responsibilities
Data Conversions (Core Focus)
- Lead full-cycle data migrations from third-party legal accounting and practice management systems.
- Analyze source databases and map client, matter, time, billing, trust, and general ledger data into required destination formats.
- Design and execute structured conversion plans, including data cleansing, transformation logic, reconciliation, and validation.
- Identify and resolve data inconsistencies, structural mismatches, and historical anomalies prior to go-live.
- Ensure converted financial data balances and aligns with client accounting standards.
Technical Execution
- Develop and maintain SQL-based scripts and conversion utilities to extract, transform, and load structured data.
- Optimize queries and transformation logic to support efficient processing of large datasets.
- Troubleshoot conversion failures and isolate root causes quickly and decisively.
- Maintain reusable conversion frameworks to increase scalability and reduce manual intervention.
Client & Implementation Collaboration
- Participate in discovery discussions to assess conversion scope and complexity.
- Set clear expectations with clients regarding data readiness, remediation requirements, and timelines.
- Work closely with Implementation Consultants and Project Managers to align technical milestones with overall project plans.
- Support client validation cycles and resolve post-conversion discrepancies.
Quality & Governance
- Conduct reconciliation checks to ensure financial and matter data integrity.
- Document mapping decisions, transformation rules, and exception handling.
- Contribute to process improvements that reduce defect rates and increase predictability of delivery.
Required Qualifications
- 7+ years of experience working with SQL Server and relational databases.
- Demonstrated experience performing structured data migrations in professional services or enterprise environments.
- Strong understanding of financial data relationships, accounting structures, and reporting dependencies.
- Proven ability to troubleshoot complex data issues under tight timelines.
- Experience working directly with clients in a technical delivery or consulting capacity.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience working with legal accounting or practice management systems.
- Prior involvement in law firm software implementations.
- Familiarity with structured data automation tools (e.g., scripting languages, task automation).
- Experience improving or standardizing repeatable conversion frameworks.
Success Metrics
- On-time completion of conversion milestones.
- Financial data balancing at go-live with minimal post-production defects.
- Reduced escalation volume related to data accuracy.
- High client confidence in conversion quality and technical leadership.
