Position Summary

The General Maintenance Technician is responsible for performing a variety of maintenance, repair, and upkeep tasks to ensure the healthcare facility remains safe, functional, and in excellent condition. This position supports a clean, comfortable, and compliant environment for patients, visitors, and staff by maintaining equipment, systems, and building structures in accordance with regulatory and safety standards.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform routine maintenance and repairs on building systems, including electrical, plumbing, HVAC, lighting, and mechanical components.
  • Inspect, troubleshoot, and resolve facility issues promptly to minimize downtime or disruption to patient care.
  • Assist with preventive maintenance programs, ensuring all equipment and systems operate efficiently and safely.
  • Maintain and repair doors, walls, floors, ceilings, and fixtures as needed.
  • Support the installation, assembly, or relocation of furniture, medical equipment, and fixtures.
  • Respond to maintenance requests and work orders in a timely and professional manner.
  • Ensure all work complies with healthcare facility codes, infection control standards, and safety regulations.
  • Monitor and maintain tools, supplies, and maintenance equipment in good working order.
  • Participate in emergency response activities, including power outages, leaks, or other facility incidents.
  • Collaborate with outside vendors and contractors as needed for specialized repairs or projects.
  • Maintain accurate records of maintenance work and preventive service activities.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • 2+ years of experience in general maintenance, preferably in a healthcare or institutional setting.
  • Working knowledge of building systems (HVAC, plumbing, electrical, carpentry, etc.).
  • Ability to read and interpret manuals, diagrams, and work orders.
  • Basic computer skills for logging work orders and maintenance reports.
  • Strong attention to detail, problem-solving skills, and ability to prioritize tasks.
  • Ability to lift, carry, and move equipment or materials up to 50 lbs. regularly.
  • Must adhere to infection control and safety procedures at all times.
  • HVAC, electrical, or plumbing certification preferred but not required.
  • Reliable transportation required; travel between facilities will be necessary.

Work Environment

  • Healthcare setting including clinical, office, and utility areas.
  • Frequent walking, standing, bending, lifting, climbing, and use of hand and power tools.
  • May require lifting and moving heavy equipment or materials as part of daily tasks.
  • Exposure to varying temperatures, noise, and occasional confined spaces.
  • May require occasional evening, weekend, or on-call hours for emergencies.
