Sr. Network Engineer

A highly respected federal contractor is seeking a Senior Network Engineer to support a mission-critical government communications and operational continuity program within a major civilian federal agency. This organization is responsible for maintaining secure, resilient, and uninterrupted communications capabilities for leadership during emergencies, national events, infrastructure disruptions, and continuity operations. This role supports enterprise-scale communications systems essential to operational awareness and rapid service restoration.


Position Overview

The Senior Network Engineer will serve as a senior technical leader responsible for designing, modernizing, securing, and sustaining highly available enterprise network environments supporting critical government operations. This role requires deep expertise in enterprise networking, infrastructure modernization, security compliance, and incident resolution across complex multi-site environments.


Key Responsibilities

• Serve as a senior technical advisor and subject matter expert for enterprise network engineering initiatives

• Lead architecture, design, and implementation of large-scale LAN, WAN, MAN, and hybrid network environments

• Drive modernization, optimization, and expansion of enterprise infrastructure, including routers, switches, firewalls, and security platforms

• Evaluate emerging technologies and provide strategic recommendations to improve network scalability, resiliency, and operational performance

• Support enterprise architecture planning, including segmentation, high availability, cloud integration, and continuity strategies

• Analyze network performance degradation through diagnostics, packet analysis, and infrastructure assessments to restore mission-critical services

• Diagnose and resolve complex network outages while documenting root causes and preventive recommendations

• Proactively monitor enterprise networks and recommend improvements to enhance performance and minimize operational risk

• Ensure compliance with federal security and configuration mandates, including OMB A-130, FISMA, and NIST frameworks

• Support research, testing, and feasibility initiatives for enterprise infrastructure and operational readiness

• Provide mentoring, technical leadership, and guidance to junior engineering personnel

• Lead high-priority, time-sensitive infrastructure projects involving multiple stakeholders and mission partners

• Provide strategic technical guidance to leadership regarding infrastructure investments, risk mitigation, and modernization priorities

• Perform system administration duties as needed

• Participate in periodic after-hours/on-call support

• Support occasional travel within the National Capital Region based on mission needs






Requirements

 

Desired Technical Experience

• Enterprise firewall, switch, and network infrastructure deployment, migration, and upgrades

• LAN/WAN architecture and operational support

• VPN, VLAN, tunneling, load balancing (including F5), and network monitoring platforms

• Build documentation, network diagrams, and data flow management

• Federal cybersecurity and compliance implementation in production environments

• Cisco networking technologies strongly preferred


Preferred Qualifications

• Cisco certifications such as CCNA or CCNP

• Experience with Juniper technologies and certifications

• Familiarity with project planning tools such as MS Project


Basic Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in a technical discipline (or equivalent experience)

• Minimum 15 years of relevant enterprise network engineering experience

• Additional experience may substitute for degree requirements

• Proven leadership and technical management capabilities

• Ability to obtain and maintain a Secret security clearance

Compensation: $140K to $160K
