Senior Technical Product Manager, Internal Software
Hybrid Remote Oakland, CA GeoBlock Factory
Job Type
Full-time
Description

Fervo is seeking a Senior Technical Product Manager, Internal Software to lead the development of internal software tools across the company. This person will be the connective tissue between Fervo's internal users and the engineers building the tools they need.

This is not a traditional product role focused on an external customer or a single product surface. You will work across teams including engineering, construction, drilling, completions, supply chain, finance, and operations to understand how work gets done, identify the workflows that slow execution, and turn ambiguous internal needs into clear, actionable product requirements.

The ideal candidate is a former software engineer or deeply technical product manager who can code, partner credibly with engineers, and move comfortably between product strategy and software execution. You do not need experience in geothermal, energy, power plants, drilling, or construction. You do need strong software judgment, sharp product instincts, comfort with ambiguity, and the ability to build useful tools quickly in a fast-moving environment.

This is a founding role for Fervo's internal software function. In the near term, you will own product direction, technical scoping, delivery, adoption, and build-vs-buy decisions. Over time, this role has the potential to evolve into leadership of Fervo's internal software development team as the function scales.

Requirements

Responsibilities

Own internal software product development from idea to adoption

  • Embed with teams across Fervo to understand their workflows, pain points, operating rhythms, and decision-making needs.
  • Translate bottlenecks into clear product requirements, technical specs, user stories, and success criteria.
  • Design for a connected software ecosystem, not one-off applications; ensure tools can integrate with existing systems, data sources, and future internal platforms.
  • Measure success through adoption, workflow improvement, and business impact; not just shipping features.

Partner deeply with engineering

  • Work closely with software engineers, contractors, and technical partners to scope, sequence, and deliver internal tools.
  • Bring enough software fluency to evaluate technical tradeoffs, ask strong questions, and make pragmatic decisions around implementation.
  • Write clear technical product requirements that help engineering teams move quickly with minimal rework.
  • Own delivery cadence, backlog management, sprint planning, stakeholder updates, and risk escalation.
  • Contribute technically where useful; especially in early prototyping, agentic coding workflows, technical review, or lightweight implementation support.

Build tools for fast-moving internal teams

  • Develop software that improves how Fervo manages complex work across engineering, construction, project execution, documentation, scheduling, modeling, procurement, and operations.
  • Identify where internal teams are relying on manual processes, disconnected data, or inefficient tools.
  • Build products that are simple, usable, and practical; the goal is not elegant software for its own sake, but tools that make Fervo faster and better.
  • Sit with users before and after launch to understand what is working, what is not, and what should change.
  • Create feedback loops that drive continuous product improvement.

Make build-vs-buy decisions

  • Audit Fervo's current internal software stack and identify where existing tools are sufficient, where they need better integration, and where purpose-built software would create meaningful leverage.
  • Recommend build, buy, integrate, or retire decisions based on business value, implementation cost, maintainability, and long-term scalability.
  • Serve as Fervo's internal expert on the resource requirements and tradeoffs of developing software in-house.
  • Help Fervo avoid both extremes: overbuilding when existing tools are good enough, and tolerating broken workflows when custom software would create real advantage.

Enable AI-enabled workflows

  • Partner with Fervo's AI and machine learning team to integrate internal data, models, and automation into the tools you build.
  • Identify opportunities for LLMs and agentic workflows to reduce manual work, including document parsing, report generation, data entry, workflow automation, and decision support.
  • Use modern coding and AI-assisted development tools to accelerate prototyping and delivery.
  • Help define practical, high-value AI use cases that improve real internal workflows rather than creating novelty features.

Help shape the future software function at Fervo

  • Establish the early operating model for internal software development at Fervo.
  • Create the product and delivery practices that future engineers, product managers, or software leaders can build upon.
  • Help determine what capabilities should be built internally, contracted externally, or hired for over time.
  • As the function proves value, help build and potentially lead a small internal software development team serving the broader company.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • 6+ years of experience across software engineering, technical product management, internal tools, platform product, software delivery, or related roles.
  • Prior experience as a software engineer, technical founder, technical product manager, engineering lead, or similarly hands-on software builder.
  • Ability to code well enough to prototype, evaluate implementation tradeoffs, and work credibly with software engineers.
  • Experience owning software products or tools from discovery through launch and iteration.
  • Strong product judgment; able to translate user pain points into clear requirements, prioritize competing needs, and define success.
  • Experience working directly with end users to understand workflows, gather feedback, and drive adoption.
  • Strong execution orientation; able to manage ambiguity, sequence work, unblock progress, and ship quickly.
  • Comfort working in a fast-moving environment with limited structure and high ownership.
  • Clear written and verbal communication; able to communicate tradeoffs, risks, and progress to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience building internal tools, developer tools, workflow software, enterprise applications, operational systems, or platform products.
  • Experience in a startup, scale-up, or small high-ownership technical team.
  • Experience working with or managing software engineers, contractors, or technical vendors.
  • Experience with AI-assisted development tools such as Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, or similar platforms.
  • Experience integrating software with third-party systems, APIs, databases, internal data platforms, or business applications.
  • Experience supporting teams that manage complex operational workflows, such as construction, engineering, supply chain, manufacturing, logistics, infrastructure, or capital projects.
  • Interest in eventually helping build and lead an internal software development team.

Who You Are

You are a software-minded product builder who likes messy, high-impact problems. You do not need a perfectly defined roadmap to get started. You are comfortable walking into an internal team, understanding how they work, identifying what is slowing them down, and turning that insight into software that makes their workstream meaningfully better.

You are technical enough to earn the trust of engineers and pragmatic enough to avoid overengineering. You care more about useful software than perfect process. You can move from user discovery to product requirements to technical tradeoffs to delivery without needing heavy supervision.

You are energized by building the foundation for a new function. You may have been a software engineer who moved into product, a product manager who stayed close to the code, or an engineering leader with strong product instincts. In any case, you are excited by the opportunity to help define what internal software development should look like at Fervo.
