Overhead Crane Operator
Description

PURPOSE

To define the roles, responsibilities, and competence requirements for the Overhead Crane Operator to ensure safe, efficient, and quality-compliant material handling operations in accordance with ISO 9001:2015 standards.

 

SCOPE

This job description applies to all personnel operating overhead cranes within the facility for the movement, lifting, and positioning of materials, products, and equipment.

  

RESPONSIBILITIES


Operational Duties

  • Operate overhead crane to lift, move, position, and place materials safely and      efficiently.
  • Inspect crane equipment prior to use (hooks, cables, controls, safety devices).
  • Follow approved lifting procedures and work instructions.
  • Ensure correct load handling techniques to prevent product damage.
  • Maintain clear communication with signalers or ground personnel.

Quality Responsibilities

  • Ensure materials are handled in a manner that prevents damage or nonconformity.
  • Follow quality procedures for handling customer or production materials.
  • Report any nonconforming materials or incidents to supervisor immediately.

Safety Responsibilities

  • Comply with all safety rules, PPE requirements, and lifting regulations.
  • Do not operate faulty or unsafe equipment.
  • Participate in safety training and toolbox talks.
  • Immediately report hazards, near misses, or accidents.

Equipment Maintenance

  • Conduct daily inspection checklists prior to operation.
  • Report defects and tag-out unsafe equipment.
  • Maintain cleanliness of crane and work area.   
Requirements

  

COMPETENCE REQUIREMENTS

  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
  • Minimum 2 years of crane operation experience (or as defined by company).

Skills & Knowledge

  • Knowledge of crane controls and lifting techniques.
  • Understanding of load charts and weight limits.
  • Basic knowledge of safety and quality requirements.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with team members.

Training Requirements

  • Certified crane operator training
  • Safety training (OSHA or equivalent)
  • Internal quality and operational procedures training

PERFORMANCE INDICATORS

  • Zero safety violations or incidents
  • Minimal product damage due to handling
  • Compliance with inspection and maintenance requirements
  • Adherence to production schedules
