Description

The inpatient Pharmacy Technician works under the direct supervision of a licensed Pharmacist to prepare, compound, and distribute medications across the hospital. Responsibilities include restocking the Pyxis, preparing IV sterile products, managing floor stock, and ensuring compliance with regulatory standards to guarantee safe medication delivery.

Qualifications

  • High school graduate or equivalent
  • PTCB certified and current Texas registration as required by the Texas State Board of Pharmacy
  • Previous experience in a hospital setting is highly desired

Role and Responsibilities

  • Accurately prepares sterile preparations, reconciles floor stock, crash carts, trauma trays and all other kits and boxes in units, processes orders into the pharmacy computer with minimal supervision and in a timely manner.
  • Identifies potential problems with orders and brings them to the attention of the pharmacist by reviewing CSAR’s, MAR’s and other records for accuracy.
  • Accurately processes patient medication orders and performs patients medication cart-fill in an accurate and timely manner. 
  • Performs charging and billing functions accurately and timely, following proper sterile techniques when preparing IV admixtures. 
  • Complies with pharmacy contracts when purchasing drugs and looks for best prices and maintains pharmacy inventory with minimal stock outages.
  • Checks for outdated or unapproved items in floor stock during restocking.
  • Performs pharmacy compounding calculations with minimal supervision.
  • Provides 24-hours Pharmacy service through on-the-job and on-call coverage.
  • Assists Director of Pharmacy in preparing necessary information for required reports.
  • Participates in data collection and development of actions plans for hospital and department performance improvement processes and changes areas identified for improvement to comply with findings. 
  • Implements safe work habits, identify and rectify sources of potential accidents and uses equipment according to manuals and policy. 
  • Performs other duties as assigned within the scope of certification.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Proficient Microsoft computer skills including Office, Outlook, and Excel
  • Knowledge of electronic medical record systems (EMRs) and other automated systems
  • Ability to work effectively with others within and outside of the department
  • Demonstrates leadership and teaching ability and the ability to work under pressure
  • Strong mathematical calculation skills for dosing
  • Meticulous attention to detail
  • Ability to stand/walk for long shifts
