Position Overview
The Lab Technician is responsible for prepping, testing, and recording data for various types of scrap metal samples.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Sample Preparation – Cutting, Surfacing, and Labeling scrap metal samples
- Melt samples using the lab furnace or Spincaster
- Take photos of samples to be tested
- Calculate melt, moisture, and hand sample recoveries
- Use the Spectrometer and Spectro Program to test chemistries, apply Type Standardizations, and utilize Grade Search functions
- Assist with pulling wire samples to create weighted average reports for inbound wire loads
- Print, scan, and send test results to relevant parties
- Utilize math, reading, and writing skills to perform job responsibilities effectively.
- Enter and store data on Excel spreadsheets and internal network drives
- Calibrate all testing equipment including scales, Spectrometer, and handheld analyzers
- Maintain a clean and contaminant free environment
- Follow the dress code and compliance of proper PPE at all times
- Work independently in the absence of direct supervision
Requirements
Job Requirements/Skills
- Excellent communication and problem-solving skills
- Ability to organize, plan and prioritize work efficiently
- Superior organizational skills and ability to multi-task
- Knowledge of base metals (Fe, Al, Cu, Etc.)
- Ability to operate equipment including band saws, belt sanders, and lathes
- Working knowledge of computers, specifically Microsoft applications
Education/Experience
- High School Diploma or GED
- Experience with chemical makeup of common alloys and trace elements a huge plus
- Experience identifying Non-Ferrous and Ferrous metals or the ability to learn quickly
Physical Requirements
- Lifting or manipulating samples in excess of 50+ lbs.
- Stand for long periods of time
- Tolerate a dusty environment
- Exposure to physical operations in scrap recycling facilities, including walking/climbing in active industrial yards with uneven surfaces in inclement weather
