Position Overview

The Lab Technician is responsible for prepping, testing, and recording data for various types of scrap metal samples. 

Duties and Responsibilities

1. Sample Preparation – Cutting, Surfacing, and Labeling scrap metal samples
2. Melt samples using the lab furnace or Spincaster
3. Take photos of samples to be tested
4. Calculate melt, moisture, and hand sample recoveries
5. Use the Spectrometer and Spectro Program to test chemistries, apply Type Standardizations, and utilize Grade Search functions
6. Assist with pulling wire samples to create weighted average reports for inbound wire loads
7. Print, scan, and send test results to relevant parties
8. Utilize math, reading, and writing skills to perform job responsibilities effectively.
9. Enter and store data on Excel spreadsheets and internal network drives
10. Calibrate all testing equipment including scales, Spectrometer, and handheld analyzers
11. Maintain a clean and contaminant free environment
12. Follow the dress code and compliance of proper PPE at all times
13. Work independently in the absence of direct supervision 

Job Requirements/Skills

1. Excellent communication and problem-solving skills
2. Ability to organize, plan and prioritize work efficiently
3. Superior organizational skills and ability to multi-task
4. Knowledge of base metals (Fe, Al, Cu, Etc.)
5. Ability to operate equipment including band saws, belt sanders, and lathes
6. Working knowledge of computers, specifically Microsoft applications

Education/Experience

1. High School Diploma or GED
2. Experience with chemical makeup of common alloys and trace elements a huge plus
3. Experience identifying Non-Ferrous and Ferrous metals or the ability to learn quickly

Physical Requirements

1. Lifting or manipulating samples in excess of 50+ lbs.
2. Stand for long periods of time
3. Tolerate a dusty environment
4. Exposure to physical operations in scrap recycling facilities, including walking/climbing in active industrial yards with uneven surfaces in inclement weather
