Summary

Maintain City Parks and related properties to provide citizens with clean, safe, and well cared for recreational facilities. Perform various construction and maintenance duties, including electrical, plumbing, carpentry, sheet rock, fire inspections, and other related tasks at facilities operated by Parks and Recreation (Harman Home, West Ridge, Stonebridge, Fitness Center, Shops, Parks). Perform a variety of skilled and semi-skilled tasks on grounds, equipment, facilities, parks, and other assigned areas. Employee may also assist in other Departments as assigned by supervisor. 


Starting Pay: $65,277 - $89,756 annually depending on experience

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

Schedule: Full-time, Monday - Friday 6:30 AM - 3:00 PM

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Work with Parks Superintendent and/or Assistant Parks and Recreation Director to review plans, perform inspections of properties under construction to ensure all aspects of the plans are followed, and keep written records of above inspections.
  • Responsible to work with and coordinate construction with all Parties needing to work in rights of way at parks and park facilities.
  • Take assignments for daily coordination and communication with all contractors constructing or renovating park facilities.
  • Inspects, records, and makes repairs to Playgrounds and other Park structures.
  • Perform maintenance duties on physical facilities such as pavilions, restrooms, score towers, fences, fountains, picnic tables, benches, and playgrounds.
  • Perform maintenance duties on power equipment, trailers, trucks, shops, storage areas, and any other equipment used in the operation and maintenance of parks.
  • As time allows, perform other Park Maintenance duties, including mowing, weeding, spraying and fertilizing of turf areas, repair and construction of irrigation systems, tree trimming, spraying, fertilizing, and general care.
  • Acts in the stead of Parks Superintendent as assigned.
  • Assist in the development of budgets and prioritizing Parks and grounds needs.
  • Assist in coordinating landscape maintenance and construction duties.
  • Assists in set-up and tear down of staging and equipment for special events sponsored by the Parks and Recreation Department.
  • Responds to or causes response to emergency calls on a 24-hour basis.
  • Lift, carry, travel, and climb ladders.
  • Enter and exit underground vaults.
  • Perform snow removal duties, including clearing of walks with shovels and/or snow blowers, applying salt and/or icemelter, and clearing of city owned parking lots with snowplows.
  • Operate machinery, mowers, trucks, backhoes, etc.
  • Use a variety of hand tools, including shovels, rakes, wrenches, etc.
  • Maintain general housekeeping in park maintenance area including sweeping, cleaning floors, emptying garbage, etc.
  • Other duties as assigned by a supervisor.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • Exercises supervision over summer workers and crew as assigned.
Requirements

Education and/or Experience

  • Graduation from high school or equivalent.
  • Minimum of five (5) years’ experience in Parks or Grounds Maintenance and/or equivalent experience in construction or industrial settings is required.

Language Skills

  • Must possess excellent written and verbal communication skills in the English language.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations

  • Valid Utah CDL Class A driver’s license, or have the ability to obtain one.
  • Have or be able to obtain: Certified Playground Inspector, Certified Loader Operator, and Certified Forklift Operator.

Other

  • Must be able to add, subtract, multiply and divide, also should be able to perform some geometric calculations.
  • Use resources efficiently and effectively.
  • Ensure safe work practices and conditions.
  • Ability to work independently.

  • This job will sometimes require lying on back or stomach and working with hands above head for extended periods. 
  • Employee will need to be on their feet and walking for extended periods.
  • Must be able to push or pull 50 pounds and lift 50 pounds to shoulder height repeatedly.

Work Environment

This position is frequently subject to extreme weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, snow and wind. Frequent exposure to dust, fumes and dirty conditions as is typical of a shop and park environment. Employee will be subject to moderate noise levels and exposure to moderate physical hazards in performing projects and in maintenance work. Also, exposure to intermittent stress due to human behavior and job tasks may be experienced.
