Policy Specialist

The Policy Specialist position will be the primary coordinator of Policy Programming and outreach as it relates to the priorities and mission of The National Comprehensive Cancer Network. In this role, the position will work with and report to the Senior Manager, Policy & Advocacy to facilitate the Policy Summit Series, and provide support to other current policy programs such as SOSF and the Advocacy Academy. The Policy Specialist will also assist with the implementation of NCCN’s annual policy and advocacy agenda at the state and federal levels of government and help to coordinate external outreach as it relates to legislative engagement, advocacy efforts, stakeholder engagement, and across our Member Institutions. 


NCCN seeks an organized and motivated candidate who will provide high-level coordination and support to the Policy and Advocacy Team. This position will help gather background information for distribution to and to prepare for meetings with external stakeholder groups, elected officials and government officials. Occasional travel required.


MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:


Policy Summit Series and Programming

  • The main coordinator for the planning and execution of the Policy and Advocacy Department’s Policy Summit Series. 
  • Works within and across departments to lead the logistical aspects of the policy summit series including scheduling, speaker identification and outreach, management of sunshine reporting, and collaboration with marketing and meetings departments for successful event execution. 
  • Provides support for the State Oncology Society Forum in-person event at NCCN’s Annual Conference
  • Provide support for any new/future funded programming for the department including but not limited to the NCCN Advocacy Academy. 

Policy Research and Analysis

  • Research information for and prepare fact sheets regarding relevant NCCN programs, policies and initiatives for interdepartmental dissemination.
  • Gather information for the preparation of talking points, presentations, and materials as needed for meetings and events with regulatory agencies, elected officials, member institutions and other external stakeholders.

Advocacy and Stakeholder Engagement

  • Support the State Policy Program Manager in the planning and facilitation of quarterly convenings of the State Oncology Society Forum (SOSF) by organizing meetings, keeping meeting minutes and oversight of the outreach for these meetings. 
  • Assist with the planning and coordination of Capitol Hill Advocacy Days.
  • Assist in the planning and facilitation of quarterly Policy Advisory Group Meetings and monthly Government Affairs Committee meetings. 
  • Assist the Policy and Advocacy Department in maintaining strategic partnerships with lawmakers, professional associations, state-societies, and community-based organizations to amplify and ensure the effectiveness of advocacy initiatives.
  • Supports the NCCN Policy and Advocacy Team’s policy priorities and events.

Communications

  • Organizes and assists with the department’s written comment needs as necessary including submissions for publication as part of the Policy Summit Series, ensuring these tasks occur in a timely manner.
  • Assists in maintaining the Policy and Advocacy content on NCCN.org 


Requirements

EDUCATION/RELATED EXPERIENCE:

  • 2 or more years of experience working in a supportive or health policy role with a state legislature, federal official, or with an advocacy organization, state society, professional association, nonprofit or corporation 
  • Successful completion of a bachelor’s degree in political science, public health, business, economics, social work, public administration, communications or other related field or equivalent work experience.
  • Outstanding organizational, planning, and project management skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously and independently.
  • Strong proofreading skills and absolute attention to detail.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Excellent relationship building skills. 
  • A commitment to the NCCN mission and values.
  • Oncology experience desirable but not required.


WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • This position operates in a professional office environment and is largely sedentary. 
  • This role routinely requires the use of standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines
