Job Summary
Mazzetti's Mechanical, Electrical, Plumbing (MEP) Consulting Engineering Practice is dedicated to designing high performance, resilience, and sustainable solutions for the built environment, with a keen focus on Healthcare and Infrastructure projects. Our team of experts combines technical excellence with a collaborative, client-focused approach to deliver exceptional outcomes.
We are seeking an experienced Senior Mechanical Designer or Senior Mechanical Engineer to join our Northern California team, based in either San Francisco or Sacramento. This individual will lead the planning, design, and delivery of complex mechanical building systems, partnering closely with multidisciplinary teams and clients to develop innovative solutions for projects throughout Northern California. Core Responsibilities
Mechanical Design & Technical Leadership
- Lead the design and documentation of HVAC and mechanical building systems for complex healthcare, science & technology, infrastructure, and commercial projects.
- Perform advanced engineering analyses, calculations, and system studies.
- Prepare engineering calculations, equipment selections, system layouts, specifications, and construction documents.
- Review engineering drawings, specifications, and calculations for quality, accuracy, code compliance, and technical excellence.
- Ensure designs comply with applicable building codes, HCAI requirements, industry standards, and Mazzetti quality expectations.
- Apply advanced mechanical engineering expertise to support project delivery and technical excellence.
Project Delivery & Client Support
- Collaborate with project managers, architects, engineers, contractors, vendors, and clients throughout project lifecycles.
- Participate in project planning, scope development, scheduling, and multidisciplinary design coordination.
- Support project pursuits by contributing technical expertise during proposals, interviews, and client presentations.
- Support construction administration activities by responding to RFIs, reviewing submittals, participating in field observations, and resolving technical issues during construction.
- Perform quality control reviews of engineering drawings and specifications at key project milestones.
Team Collaboration & Mentorship
- Work closely with multidisciplinary engineering teams across Mazzetti offices.
- Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior designers and engineers.
- Contribute to continuous improvement, knowledge sharing, and technical excellence across the Mechanical discipline.
Work Location: This is a hybrid position based in either the San Francisco or Sacramento, CA areas, involving primarily working from home, client site visits throughout Northern California, and occasional presence in our San Francsico or Sacramento offices as needed for project collaboration and team-building activities.
Travel Requirements: Approximately 10–15% travel, primarily within the Northern California region based on project assignments.
Education & Experience
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related engineering discipline.
- 8+ years of mechanical engineering or mechanical design experience within the AEC consulting industry.
- Healthcare design experience strongly preferred, ideally including 6+ years designing California hospitals, acute care facilities, and/or medical office buildings (MOBs).
- Experience working on HCAI (formerly OSHPD) projects is strongly preferred.
- Demonstrated experience leading mechanical design efforts on complex building projects from planning through construction.
- Experience collaborating with multidisciplinary project teams, clients, contractors, and design partners.
- Experience supporting project pursuits, proposals, and client presentations preferred.
Technical Expertise
- Advanced knowledge of HVAC and mechanical building systems design.
- Strong understanding of applicable building codes, industry standards, and integrated building design.
- Advanced proficiency with Revit, AutoCAD, and/or Bluebeam.
- Experience overseeing design quality, coordination, and technical deliverables.
- Working knowledge of HCAI (formerly OSHPD) requirements, codes, review processes, and construction administration is strongly preferred.
- Familiarity with sustainable, resilient, and high-performance building design principles.
- Strong communication and presentation skills.
Licenses & Certifications
- Professional Engineer (PE) license in California strongly preferred.

Compensation: The typical salary range for a Senior Mechanical Designer or Engineer in San Francisco or Sacramento, CA is $100,000-$211,000. We are committed to equitable pay and will evaluate final compensation based on relevant experience and skills in alignment with internal equity and market data.
