POSITION: Pre-school/Kindergarten Teacher Aide 


General Description This full-time position reports to the assigned teacher. The classroom instructional assistant will meet all qualifications and behavior standards as set by the San Antonio, Archdiocesan Catholic School Office and as stated in the Salesian Teacher Profile.  It is primarily the witness and the behavior of instructors that give the distinctive character to Catholic schools. While an instructional assistant is knowledgeable and qualified in subject matter and educational philosophy they must also demonstrate a practical knowledge of these areas in the classroom and consider their lived-faith and their Christian life-style just as important as their professional credentials. All classroom instructional assistants shall meet the following employment criteria:


Educational Requirements

  • College hours in early childhood development.preferred A degree is not required
  • Minimum high school diploma or equivalent
  • Experience working with children ages 3 to 6


Primary Responsibilities 

  • Be diligent in learning the Salesian Educational Philosophy and dedicated in its implementation and application
  • Maintain a high level of confidentiality
  • Cultivate attitudes and skills in one’s self and students for life-long learning 
  • Follow the directions of the teachers in developing students cognitive capacity and love for learning 
  • Foster students' self-worth, love for God and love for one another, forming good Christians and honest citizens


Summary of Essential Functions

  • Meets regular and predictable attendance requirements 
  • Assists with classroom instruction by completing assigned tasks as directed by the teacher
  • Guides students to stay on task and go through the learning process
  • Guides students in working and playing harmoniously with others
  • Alerts the teacher to special needs of individual children
  • Assists with the supervision in the playground and/or cafeteria
  • Assist teacher in taking children to and from instructional areas, restrooms, and playground
  • Attend archdiocesan, on-campus, and other in services as required
  • Promotes student growth, achievement, and feeling of self-worth
  • Establishes a cooperative relationship with all assigned students 
  • Works collaboratively to achieve the overall purposes of the school program


KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Knowledge of the basic teachings of the Catholic Church
  • Knowledge of instructional methods/strategies
  • Knowledge of child development, learning and behavior
  • Able to manage student behavior
  • Able to communicate effectively in both written and verbal form
  • Able to work well with others in a school community
  • Skill in handling multiple tasks simultaneously
  • Skill in job appropriate technology
  • Skill in critical thinking and planning


WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Required to work some nights and weekends
  • Required to manage high to moderate levels of stress
  • Required to work a minimum of a full school day
  • Required to work in standard classroom and school conditions 


MENTAL/PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Required to lift or carry supplies, textbooks, furniture, and equipment
  • Required to maintain composure and avoid inappropriate displays of anger
  • Required to sit, stand, bend, stoop, reach, grab, pull, hear, see, and speak on a daily basis
  • Required to perform repetitive physical tasks such as computer keyboarding, writing, and reading
  • Required to monitor students in a variety of locations including those with noise, activity, and inclement weather


EVAULATION:  Performance of this job will be evaluated by the Principal.
