Position Summary 

The Youth Development Professional (Sports Coordinator) supports the delivery of high-quality sports, fitness, recreation, and healthy lifestyle programming for youth ages 5 to 18 at Boys & Girls Clubs of Silicon Valley. This role provides direct supervision, coaching, mentorship, and program support to help members build teamwork, confidence, discipline, sportsmanship, and positive relationships. 


Working under the direction of Club leadership, the sports Coordinator helps plan, lead, set up, supervise, and evaluate athletic activities, leagues, clinics, games, tournaments, and special events. The position is hands-on and requires active engagement with members, families, volunteers, and staff across Club and partner sites. 


Essential Responsibilities 


Youth Supervision and Engagement 

  • Actively supervise Club members during sports, fitness, recreation, and off-site activities, keeping member safety and well-being as the first priority. 
  • Lead activities that promote healthy lifestyles, teamwork, good sportsmanship, fair play, and positive behavior. 
  • Provide guidance, encouragement, mentorship, and role-modeling to help members make positive choices. 
  • Use positive behavior guidance, redirection, and reinforcement consistent with BGCSV policies and youth development practices. 
  • Support inclusive participation so youth of all abilities and backgrounds can participate successfully. 

Sports Program Delivery and Coordination 

  • Assist with planning, scheduling, implementing, and evaluating site-based sports, fitness, recreation, team sports, intramurals, clinics, and special events. 
  • Lead or support daily sports activities, practices, games, tournaments, and skill-building sessions. 
  • Promote program participation and help members understand schedules, expectations, rules, and safety procedures. 
  • Assist with member registration, rosters, attendance, permission slips, releases, and other program documentation. 
  • Coordinate with the Clubhouse staff, coaches, volunteers, and site teams to support smooth program delivery. 
  • Help ensure sports and recreation activities are represented on site calendars and communicated to members and families. 
  • Recruit and enroll members from all school sites within the Mt. Diablo Unified School District to ensure broad, equitable program participation. 

Facility, Equipment, and Event Support 

  • Set up and clean up sports equipment, tables, chairs, fields, gyms, and program spaces before and after activities. 
  • Monitor the condition of facilities, gyms, fields, and equipment while in use and report safety concerns promptly. 
  • Maintain inventory of sports equipment and supplies; distribute, collect, clean, and store equipment properly. 
  • Assist with ordering, repairing, or replacing supplies and equipment as directed. 
  • Support weekend, evening, tournament, league, and special event operations as assigned. 
  • May assist with emergency custodial or basic facility needs related to sports program operations. 

Communication and Teamwork 

  • Maintain professional, respectful communication with members, parents and caregivers, volunteers, staff, coaches, officials, and community partners. 
  • Communicate member needs, accomplishments, behavior concerns, incidents, and program updates to site leadership. 
  • Participate in staff meetings, trainings, and program planning conversations. 
  • Work collaboratively with other Youth Development Professionals, Site Directors, Clubhouse Directors, and other program staff. 
  • Maintain a high standard of customer service when interacting with Club members, families, volunteers, and the public. 

Safety, Records, and Compliance 

  • Follow BGCSV safety, supervision, child protection, mandated reporting, transportation, and incident response procedures at all times. 
  • Maintain confidentiality of member, family, staff, volunteer, and Club information. 
  • Complete attendance, incident reports, inventory notes, and other records accurately and on time. 
  • Ensure activities are conducted in a safe, clean, age-appropriate, and developmentally appropriate manner. 
  • Immediately report suspected abuse, safety concerns, injuries, incidents, or policy concerns according to BGCSV procedures. 
  • Perform other related duties as assigned to support Club programs and operations. 


Requirements

 

Required Qualifications 

  • Must be at least 21 years of age. 
  • High school diploma or GED required; college coursework in recreation, kinesiology, sports management, education, child development, or a related field preferred. 
  • Experience working with youth ages 5 to 18 in a school, after-school, sports, recreation, camp, coaching, or youth development setting. 
  • Knowledge of youth development, active supervision, group management, and positive behavior guidance. 
  • Working knowledge of the rules, equipment, and safe instruction practices for a variety of team sports and recreation activities. 
  • Ability to motivate youth, manage behavior challenges, and remain calm under pressure. 
  • Strong oral and written communication skills and ability to work cooperatively as part of a team. 
  • Basic computer skills, including email, calendars, word processing, spreadsheets, and program tracking tools. 
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule, including afternoons, evenings, weekends, and special events. 
  • Reliable transportation to travel to assigned Club sites, program locations, meetings, trainings, and events. 

Licenses, Certifications, and Clearance 

  • Must successfully complete all required background checks, fingerprinting, and clearance requirements before working with youth. 
  • Must complete mandated reporter training and required child safety, abuse prevention, and youth protection training. 
  • Current CPR, First Aid, and AED certification preferred at hire and required within the timeframe set by BGCSV. 
  • Valid California driver's license, acceptable driving record, and authorization to drive may be required if transporting youth or traveling between sites. 

Physical Requirements and Work Environment 

  • Regularly required to stand, walk, sit, talk, hear, reach, bend, kneel, and use hands for sports equipment, technology, and program materials. 
  • Must be able to actively supervise youth in gyms, fields, playgrounds, Club spaces, vehicles, and off-site athletic locations. 
  • Must be able to participate in sports and recreation activities as needed to model, teach, supervise, or support programs. 
  • Must be able to lift and move program equipment and supplies up to 25 pounds regularly and up to 50 pounds occasionally, with assistance when needed. 
  • Work is performed in indoor and outdoor settings and may involve noise, weather exposure, athletic activity, and frequent movement between program areas or sites.
