Description

GENERAL FUNCTION

Under the direction of the Sports Director, Sports Assistants are responsible for assisting in the facilitation and implementation of youth and adult sports programs at the Stephens Family YMCA. Sports Assistants should have a genuine interests in sports, youth and more importantly, people and their well-being. 


KNOW-HOW

Applicants for this position should have:

  • An outgoing personality and willingness to interact with participants, families and members of the YMCA.
  • Basic knowledge of rules and principles of sports such as basketball, football, soccer and volleyball.
  • Leadership skills to maintain control of participants, coaches and spectators while working.
  • Ability to relate to a diverse group of people of all ages.
  • Experience playing or officiating sports is preferred.


STEPHENS FAMILY YMCA SPORTS PROGRAMS

Sports programs at the YMCA are primarily during Monday-Friday evening and weekends. Sports Assistants may work in one or more of the following sports programs:

  • Youth Sports Leagues (Basketball, Football and/or Soccer)
  • Preschool Sports Classes
  • Adult Basketball League
  • Sports clinics and trainings


RESPONSIBILITIES

Sports Assistants may be responsible for:

  • Creating a fun and friendly atmosphere in all sports programs by greeting, conversing and learning the names of participants and families at the YMCA.
  • Officiating youth sports league games.
  • Working the scorer’s table for basketball league games.
  • Setting up and taking down of equipment before and after programs.
  • Serving as a substitute coach for those unable to attend practices/games.
  • Effectively communicating the rules of the game to players and coaches.
  • Enforcing sportsmanship, rules and procedures to participants, volunteers and spectators during programs.
  • Communicating any issues or feedback from participants to the Sports Director.
  • All other duties deemed necessary by the Sports Director.


TRAININGS

Staff will be trained in the following after hiring:

  • CPR and First Aid, where applicable
  • Rules and Regulations for YMCA Sports Programs
  • Proper officiating techniques for specific sports
  • How to instruct or coach youth in specific sports
